Jane Bunnett and the "Spirits of Havana Band" live at The Hothouse, Concert review and photos by James Walker (original) (raw)

<valign=left> The second night of the 3rd Annual Jazz en Clave at the Hot House on November 9th was far less exciting than the opening nights set with the Chicago Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble. Jane Bunnett and the Spirits of Havana Band was quite disappointing. Perhaps it was a letdown after the excitement that was displayed the previous night, but this set was very flat.

Its possible the first set of the evening, which this writer did not attend, was performed with enthusiasm, but the second set left a lot to be desired. It was short and nondescript. There were moments of brilliance by saxophonist/flautist Bunnett, but those instances were few and far between. I just expected more from this group and left the set wishing the previous nights ensemble had occupied the stage for a second night.

When I think of Cuban music the image that I perceive produces foot-tapping, heart throbbing beats that were missing during this set. It was too laid back. Not the type of music to make one get up on the dance floor for samba and salsa. It was quite evident that the rather small audience wasnt moved either. Perhaps it was a blessing that this set was only 45 minutes long. This writer was relieved upon its completion.
