Blink at Martyr's Chicago Live jazz concert review and photos by Brad Walseth (original) (raw)

The crowd at Martyr's Thursday night was treated to a triple header of modern jazz and fusion, with opening act, Blink, offering up a set of excellent atmospheric modern sounds. A "supergroup" of young, up-and-coming players, Blink consists of bassist Jeff Greene, saxophonist Greg Ward, guitarist Dave Miller and drummer Quin Kirchner. All are well-known for their work with various configurations around town. In this particular group their strengths are highlighted in a balanced format.

Ward's sweet alto is the perfect counterpart to Miller's sparkling effected guitar work, while the rhythm section of Greene and Kirchner is tight and explosive. The overall sound of the group is mysterious and intriguing and makes one quite interested in their upcoming CD release. Blink is a group on the rise and one Chicagoans should look out for.
