Bill Huck's studio was a converted garage at his home in suburban Chicago, and he had been recording organ music of the type that was played at skating rinks in those days. His organ LP's had been selling well and he was probably making a decent income on the side from his studio. Then he made the mistake of taking the advice of some jazz fans who thought he should get into recording some young, local jazz musicians who needed exposure, and my name came up. After recording this album and several others, he ran out of money and eventually the studio closed. I'm sure he cursed the day he first heard the word "jazz." The trio on this recording was my first at the London House. I began work as the house trio in May 1957 on a two-week contract, with options. This two-week gig lasted twelve years and many personnel changes. E.H.

To avoid any confusion, the song "1166" was recorded the following day with another pianist and is the track that was issued on the Mercury recodings. The version of the song that Eddie recorded was not released.

Eddie South could certainly not be considered a jazz 'trail blazer.' He did play real jazz on an instrument that has never been particularly effective in the jazz idiom, but this, in itself, does not qualify anyone for jazz immortality. What was important about Eddie South was the unquenchable enthusiasm for playing. He lived through four generations of jazz, typified by Armstrong, Goodman, Gillespie and Ornette Coleman, and played his violin throughout this country and Europe. He was a friend of most of the jazz greats dating back to the early 20's, and never grew cynical or disillusioned about the music he loved. I had the good fortune to make this album with Eddie at the tail-end of his career, and getting to know him was one of the most refreshing experiences I've ever had. His excitement and spontaneous enthusiasm were truly infectious, and his playing reflected a genuinely warm personality. E.H.

The stage at the Chicago Stadium was round and divided in half by a high curtain. As one group finished its set, while the audience was still applauding, the stage revolved 180 degrees to reveal the next group, already playing the intro to its first tune. This device eliminated the tear-down and set-up period between groups, but depended on the next group being not only on time, but onstage and ready to play when the stage started to turn. Fifteen minutes prior to our set with Hawkins, my trio awaited his arrival from the airport with considerable nervousness. Finally, with only a few minutes to spare, in he walked, impeccably dressed, with his saxaphone case in one hand and a small airline travel bag in the other. He sat down at a table, opened the bag and took out a pint of whiskey, had a generous swig, and gave me a noncommital stare. I sat down and introduced myself and asked if there was anything in particular he wanted to play, given the fact that our set was about to start. He shrugged his shoulders, grunted and took another swig. At that point I decided to take matters into my own hands. I quickly suggested several tunes. His reaction was to shrug, grunt and swig. Then it was time to take our places on the stage. I got the signal to start the intro, looked at Hawk for a tempo, but he was busy putting his horn together, so I went into the famous Bird intro to 'All The Things You Are' and we were off and running. There were 19,000 people in the audience that afternoon, not much by today's rock 'n roll standards, but still the largest of my career. I remember getting goosebumps when about 10,000 of them applauded my solo on 'Body and Soul.' When our set was over, the stage revolved and we were again out of sight of the audience. Hawk packed up his horn, walked right by us and out the door. He never said a word, but I'll never forget how magnificently he played, and what a thrill it was to accompany him. E.H.

The song "April And The Winds" is incorrectly titled on the album as "April In The Winds."

This session date is in dispute, as most discographic references suggest that the session date was June 1960, although the album liner notes state January 1961. The sequence of the Chess matrix numbers in this session compared to the matrix sequence of other performers, prior to and after the Goldie session, suggests that June 1960 may indeed be the correct session date and the January 1961 date was the mastering date prior to the release.

One night between sets at the London House, I got a call from Jack Tracy, a writer for Down Beat magazine and A&R man for Argo Records, a small Chicago jazz label. He asked, "Eddie. What are doing tomorrow afternoon?" I replied, "Nothing special. Why?" "I've got a record date for you at Chess Studios." "OK, Jack. What time?" "Eddie! Don't you want to know who's on the date?" "If you're that excited, I'm sure I'll enjoy it, Jack. What time?" "Damn, Eddie! You're no fun at all! It's Al Grey and a bunch of guys from the Basie band!" "OK, Jack," now definitely pulling his leg. "What time?" Needless to say, I was plenty excited when I walked into the studio the next day. I got a somewhat cool reception (not surprising considering the fact that they were world-class jazz musicians with the world famous Basie band and they had never heard of me). After the first tune, the atmosphere warmed up considerably and it turned out to be one of the most memorable studio sessions I've ever done. In subsequent years I worked a lot with Al Grey and he always used to say that it was my piano intro on "Salty Papa" that made it a "hit" (it did get considerable play when the LP was released). In the fall of 1960 I made two albums for Vee-Jay Records, a black-owned Chicago label. The first was with Lee Morgan, Clifford Jordan, Art Davis and Art Blakey, and I composed the title tune. The second was my own date: half a quintet with Frank Foster, Paul Serrano and my current London House trio of Jim Atlas and Marshall Thompson; the other half a trio date with Richard Evans replacing Atlas on bass. The Lee Morgan date was important for two reasons: it kind of put me on the map in the jazz world, and it resulted in an offer from Art Blakey to join the Jazz Messangers. I turned down the offer, but that's a longer story. E.H.

These Vee-Jay dates with my trios resulted in my second album as a leader and contain my all-time favorite solo ("You Leave Me Breathless"). They also produced an amusing anecdote. Sid McCoy was the A&R man for Vee-Jay, but he was also the most popular black dj on Chicago radio at the time, and a big fan of mine (which explains what I was doing on a black label with a roster of 99% black artists!). For the cover photo, Don Bronstein (a Playboy magazine photographer who did many of the centerfolds) took me downtown to the Lyon & Healy piano department and took a beautiful color shot of me looking through a piano, with the late afternoon sunlight creating a rich panoply of browns and golds. It's still one of my favorite pictures of myself. Anyway, as a result of Sid's enthusiastic airplay, a lot of black jazz fans were showing up at South Side record stores asking for my album. When they saw the cover, a lot of them would say, "Ummm....I don't think so....what else you got?" When the word got back to Vee-Jay that a lot of sales were being lost because of the cover, I got a call from Ewert Abner, the VP of the label. "Great album, Eddie, but next time I'm putting a gorgeous black girl on the cover!" E.H.

A year after my first Vee-Jay album, I was back in the studio doing another Vee-Jay date, this time with Wayne, Freddy Hubbard, Jymie Merritt on bass and Marshall Thompson. Again, I composed the title tune. This turned out to be my last album for Vee-Jay, but it (along with "Expoobident") has been the most widely heard of all the recordings I've been on. I'm still getting ASCAP royalties on those two tunes!" E.H.

Most discographies indicate that the Bobby Gordon sessions were recorded January 10 and 11, 1963. Although Higgins cannot offer different dates, he disputes the January 10-11 dates saying that he was on the road with Jack Teagarden at the time. Gordon himself recalls the sessions as occurring in 1962. This seems likely as the sessions were not initially recorded for Decca, but were sold to Decca perhaps 6 months later and then issued by Decca in early 1963. Gordon recalls the unknown vibist only as a Chicagoan who doubled on vibes and drums.

From September 1962 until March 1963 I was on the road with Jack Teagarden, traveling throughout the eastern half of the USA. We did gigs in as far north as Milwaukee, as far east as Camden, NJ, as far west as Las Cruces, NM and ended in Ft. Lauderdale at the height of the season. One night, a local fan came in and set up a home tape recorder on a table right in front of the bandstand. He had a little ceramic microphone, suitable for amateur use, and asked Jack if he could record our set, promising to send us copies. Sure enough, a few months later I received a package of a couple of reel-to-reel tapes. I put them on, not expecting much, and got even less. The sound was horrible, with terrible distortion, flutter and wow. Since the mike was placed right in front of Jack, the front line and the piano came through fairly well, but the bass was inaudible and the drums were a far-away roar. The total effect was somewhat akin to listening to music through the distant end of a drainpipe. I thought to myself, "Well, I guess it's nice to have some evidence that I played with Jack, but this will definitely never come out on a record!" WRONG!! Somehow, a copy of the tape found its way into the hands of Ed Burke, a fervent jazz fan from South Florida who issues LP's of mostly big band air checks and private tapes on his Fanfare label, and so it came out after all. During my twelve years as the house trio at the London, I went through several changes in my bass and drums personnel, but the group that lasted the longest was Richard Evans on bass (now a long-time member of the Berklee faculty in Boston), and the late Marshall Thompson on drums. We developed an extensive repertoire and Richard played a major role in writing original tunes and providing some of our best arrangements. On this date for Atlantic, he contributed "Soulero," "Mr. Evans" and the arrangement of "Beautiful Dreamer." E.H.

Higgins was working in the recording booth at this session. Dave Pike had been playing vibes during the session but was unfamiliar with the melody for "Insensatez." The group was running out of studio time, so Higgins started the tape and ran out into the studio and played vibes on this one track. The group was Sergio Mendes' Brasil '65. Another track in the album, "Abraco a Sergio," was composed by Higgins and played by Mendes. Originally intended for background music for the Seeburg Co., Mendes was upset that the the music was later released as an album.

Just about every jazz musician I've ever known cherishes a secret ambition to make an album with strings, or some large, orchestral setting. My chance came in the summer of 1966 and Richard Evans did 9 of the 12 arrangements for a studio orchestra comprised of some of Chicago's finest brass, woodwind and string players. I arranged "I Live To Love" and composed and arranged "Miko-san" - Richard did the rest. The results were on the commercial side, but I was happy: I had my "strings" album! E.H.

This recording was done under the auspices of Rev. Robert H. Owen as a (uncompensated) fund raiser for his Rush Street ministry in Chicago. Fr. Owen plays piano on two tracks in the album ("The Pearls" and "Darktown Strutters Ball") and turns the piano duties over to Higgins for the remainder of the album.

"Fidgety Feet" is an old Dixieland warhorse from the 20's and still gets a lot of play at Traditional Jazz festivals. It was the first tune we tried at this session and the first take was so astounding that, when it was over, we stood around grinning and shaking our heads in disbelief. Finally, Dave Remington, the strawboss leader on that date, yelled at the engineer in the booth, "That's a keeper!" and we went on with the session. To this day, every time I listen to it I tap my feet and smile and remember how exhilerated we were on that day in Lake Geneva. Voila! E.H.

Higgins only recalls that the unknown, third song in the medley was music from the film "The Plastic Dome of Norma Jean."

For years after my move to Ft. Lauderdale in 1970, I returned to Chicago, sometimes twice a year, to perform in local jazz clubs like the Back Room on Rush Street and the Jazz Showcase. This recording was first issued on two LP's titled "My Time Of Day" and "Dream Dancing" on the Claremont label. Later, it was re-issued in Florida on the Spinnster label (on both LP and cassette). It's final incarnation is the Solo Art CD which, unfortunately, does not have room for all the material released on the LP's. Of the two, long medleys, I arranged the "Porgy and Bess" and Richard Evans arranged "West Side Story. E.H.

My first trip to Japan was in 1980 and for four months I did steady gigs at hotels in Osaka and Niigata, a TV show in Tokyo, a jazz festival in Miyazaki, various one-nighters in jazz clubs in several cities, and an album for Toshiba Records. I loved working in Japan: the audiences, the pianos, the marvelous trains and subways, but most of all the food. For my entire time there I ate nothing but Japanese food of every type. My recording session for Toshibawas divided into two 3-hour stints: an afternoon solo session and an evening session with a Japanese rhythm section. In between sessions was a break for dinner and, as I walked into the control room, the producer smiled and said, "Eddie-san, we know you must be hungry , so we've sent out for a special treat for you, and we hope you enjoy it!" I was delighted. "Oh boy! Is it sashimi (raw fish)? Is it unagi (broiled eel)? What is it?" "Kentucky Fried Chicken," was the reply, and my face must have shown my dismay, because they were taken aback and started to apologize. Knowing the Japanese sensitivities as I did, I immediately covered up, ate the chicken with feigned pleasure, and face was saved all around. Of course, they were only trying to please me, never guessing that after four months of heavenly Japanese food, American fast food was culture shock! E.H.

The performance of 'Oh, Lady Be Good' was a mixed improvisation that included a generous dose of Thelonious Monk's 'Hackensack.' Since Monk's composition draws heavily on the same changes in 'Oh, Lady Be Good,' Higgins believes that the song should remain titled as 'Oh, Lady Be Good' with a notated nod to 'Hackensack.'
In the Triumvirate issue, 'The Chef' is incorrectly titled 'The Chief.'
In the High Definition Jazz issue, two identical tracks of 'What's New' appear. Neither is an alternate take.

Bubba's was an elegant restaurant that featured jazz from 1978 to 1982 and only 20 minutes from my Ft. Lauderdale home. I look back on that period as one of the happiest times of my career: playing with world-class musicians in a nice environment (I even brought in my 9-foot Yamaha grand to play on). To name just a few of the giants I worked with at Bubba's: Dizzy Gillespie, Milt Jackson, Joe Williams, Stan Getz, Joe Pass, Al Cohn and Zoot Sims, not to mention the legendary multi-instrumentalist, Ira Sullivan, with whom I co-led the resident group. This recording came about as a direct result of a festival in Indianapolis called JAM, an acronym for Jazz Artists Musicale, which I played for 10 consecutive Julys in the 80's and 90's. One particular set in 1986 with Milt Hinton and Bobby Rosengarden caught the attention of Renzie Hamilton and Gus Statiras and they approached me that very afternoon with the idea of doing an LP with the same trio. Renzie would finance it and Gus would issue it on his Statiras label. The following month, I flew down to New York and recorded (in one afternoon) what has turned out to be the best-selling record of my career. In 1992, George Buck (the New Orleans jazz impresario) bought the master from Gus and asked me to record some more material, so as to bring the total time up to CD standards. So I went into a Chicago studio and did the solo tracks that now appear on George's Solo Arts label. E.H.
