(original) (raw)

According to the NY Times (March 28, 1977) the following "long suppressed 5,000-word letter" from Richard Hauptmann to his mother was finally made public after having been secretly hidden by the prison warden under whose charge Hauptmann was electrocuted in 1936. Mrs. Hauptmann, a resident of Kamenz, Germany never knew of her son's letter.

Trenton State Prison Warden, Col. Mark O. Kimberling never allowed it to be sent, according to the Times, because he feared an "unfavorable reaction."

The translation (from German into English) was made by Kimberling's prison staff and Kimberling kept this in HIS personal files until he died in 1964. His wife kept it until she died 13 years later.

The Kidnapping of the Lindbergh Baby

by Carol Wallace

HISTORY IN DISPUTE by ELI C. BORTMAN (submitted by Sue Campbell)

Was Bruno Richard Hauptmann guilty of kidnapping and killing Charles A. Lindbergh's son?

Viewpoint: Yes Hauptmann received a fair trial and was guilty of the kidnapping and murder of the Lindbergh baby.

Viewpoint: No Hauptmann was convicted on the basis of fabricated evidence and without proper defense counsel; the trial was a mockery of justice in an atmosphere of public outrage.
