We are an international community of Buddhist students and teachers practising meditation in the Mahāyāna Mahā Ati (Dzogchen) tradition of Buddhism.

Announcing the Creation of the Longchen Teachers College

Rigdzin Shikpo was the first lineage holder of the Longchen Foundation and with his passing away in April 2023, we have found ourselves in a very different Dharma situation. A few days before he died, Rinpoche said that the time was now right to establish a Longchen Teachers College. This was a project that he first talked about decades ago, so it seems auspicious that he gave his approval for the College to be formed at this pivotal time.

A great deal of work has gone into developing a structure and establishing the membership of the Teachers College. Fifteen people who were authorised as Longchen teachers by Rigdzin Shikpo now form the inner College, whilst the wider College includes many of his other students who are in training to teach, or acting as meditation guides. The overarching purpose of the Teachers College is to support the Mandala Mother to ensure that our particular lineage, which Rigdzin Shikpo named ‘Mahayana Maha Ati’, continues as a living tradition into the future. We came together for the first annual meeting in Oxford and online in June 2024, when we agreed to our objectives for the year ahead. These involve working together to resume teaching the Longchen Programmes that have been paused since Rigdzin Shikpo’s passing, both for the benefit of students already in training, as well as those hoping to start. We also want to collate more systematically the many decades of recordings of Rigdzin Shikpo’s teachings, which are our main source of inspiration.

Working as a group of teachers requires a very different approach from having one principal teacher. It has therefore taken us some time to find the right way to organise ourselves. However we are now confident that going forward we will be able to offer the full range Longchen courses and are planning a much fuller teaching programme in 2025. We hope you can join us soon to experience the rich and inspiring world of Mahayana Maha Ati.
