Andrew Davis (Former Midtown High Principal) (original) (raw)
MR. DAVIS
Real Name: Andrew Davis
Identity/Class: Human
Occupation: Formerly Midtown High School principal
Group Membership: None
Affiliations: Peter Parker, Eugene "Flash" Thompson, Ben Urich, Angela Yin, unnamed Midtown High teacher, several unnamed students
Enemies: Sandman (Baker)
Known Relatives: None
Aliases: The Principal, Principal Davis
Base of Operations: Formerly Midtown High
First Appearance: Amazing Spider-Man I#4 (September, 1963)
Powers/Abilities: Possessing the strength and agility of an average man his age, Davis nonetheless has little problem standing his ground against more powerful adversaries.
History: (Amazing Spider-Man I#4) - Speaking to a classroom of students, Midtown High principal Mr. Davis was stunned when the Sandman burst into the room, thinking that a school would be a safe place to hide out from the police. Refusing to give into the Sandman when he demanded Davis give him a diploma, Davis called for the students to flee while he held off the Sandman (which earned Davis his student's respect). Before Sandman could act, Spider-Man caught up to him, leading him away from Davis and the others.
(Amazing Spider-Man I#8/Spectacular Spider-Man II#225/2 (fb) - BTS) - Davis watched Peter Parker knockout Flash Thompson when they decided to settle their differences in the boxing ring. (Amazing Spider-Man I#26) - Davis watched Parker get into a fight with Thompson and his cronies through his office window. Sending a student to bring Parker to his office, Davis reprimanded Parker for his actions, but later spoke to Thompson who confessed that he'd goaded Parker into coming at him. (Amazing Spider-Man I#28) - On his way into school, Mr. Davis ran into Parker, stopping him to inform him he'd spoken to Thompson and that they'll put the business of the fight aside. (Spectacular Spider-Man II#225/2 (fb) - BTS) - Mr. Davis stepped down as principal of Midtown High. (see comments) (Spectacular Spider-Man II#225/2) - Davis spoke to Daily Bugle reporter Ben Urich about Peter Parker when his former star-pupil was on trial for a series of murders (actually committed by a renegade clone of Parker). Davis spoke enthusiastically of his former student, recalling the time when Parker's glasses were broken by Flash Thompson, leading to their boxing match. Musing over the events of Parker's victory, Davis realized that Parker curiously never went back to wearing glasses. Thinking it over, Davis figured he must have switched to contact lenses.
Comments: Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko
I'd originally assumed Davis retired after leaving Midtown High, but the setting of his interview in Spectacular Spider-Man II#225 suggests he is still working. It's unrevealed if he's still affiliated with Midtown High or the New York school system, however.
Davis' first name was revealed in the Spider Friends entry in OHOTMU A-Z HC#10.
