A new season brings even more #MASSMoCA magic ✨

In honor of #MemberMonday, we`re sharing a few images from the 2023 Member Preview of "Like Magic" — an exhibition that brings together ten artists who employ technologies of magic to resist systems that attempt to surveil and control people’s lives and stories, often because of their race, ability, sexuality, gender identity, indigeneity, or immigration status.

Want to learn more about "Like Magic" and other upcoming exhibitions? Consider becoming a member to gain access to all of the perks! Members are invited to join us this Saturday, October 5 for an exclusive tour of "Like Magic" with MASS MoCA Curator Alexandra Foradas.

Along the road to Hybridabad in Osman Khan’s immersive exhibition, contemporary technologies are exposed as the monsters in the tales we tell today. Demands for passwords and border control are transfigured into a djinn, drones— originally developed as remote-operated killing machines— transmute flying carpets into ferocious, caged beasts, and thermally activated tablets share a warning of the dangers of war rather than aid armies in destruction.

"Road to Hybridabad" employs what Khan and others have called “active hybridity:” the intentional combination of the cultures of the colonizer (technologies developed for capitalism and warfare) and the colonized (technologies of delight, folktales, patterns). While colonizers have often employed active hybridity as a tool for domination, Khan uses it to disrupt the aesthetics and logics that support dominant power systems, creating what he calls “a purposeful composition that exists between binaries,” that characterizes the migrant condition.

We couldn`t be more excited to officially welcome Evan Garza to our curatorial team! Evan has already made their mark on MASS MoCA through the curation of Steve Locke`s "the fire next time" (on view now) – we can`t wait to see what else they`ll bring to our campus.

A Texas native, Evan Garza is a global contemporary art scholar, queer art historian, and Curator at MASS MoCA. For the last two years, Garza was an inaugural Curatorial Exchange Initiative Fellow at MASS MoCA, where they curated the exhibition Steve Locke: the fire next time. Garza was previously a Fulbright Scholar at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, co-curator of the 2021 Texas Biennial, Director of Public Art at Rice University in Houston, and Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas at Austin. Garza was cofounder of Fire Island Artist Residency (FIAR), a New York nonprofit and the first residency program in the world exclusively for LGBTQ+ artists. Their writing has been published in several books and monographs. Garza earned their M.A. from the Williams Graduate Program in the History of Art at the Clark Art Institute.

Did you know that Amy Podmore`s "Audience" isn`t the only exhibition that features eyeballs at #MASSMoCA?

Exhibited in Building 6, in the largest form "Audience" has taken to date, @podmoreamy assumes implicit dialogue with Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010), whose work "Nature Study (Velvet Eyes), 1984" is on view adjacent to her own. Generations apart, both artists nonetheless invoke whimsical forms and concepts of the gaze to consider the psychological uncanniness of the everyday.

Be on the lookout for these observant exhibitions as you wander through our galleries — you might just have all eyes on you.

In her three channel video “Hometraining (Bagpipe Piece)” – on view in “Like Magic” – artist Simone Bailey “confronts two different parts of [her] bloodline” as a “person who directly descends from people who were terrorized by burning crosses” but whose cultural heritage also encompasses the peoples that the practice was stolen from.

Crann Tara was an ancient Scottish Highland tradition in which a burning cross was used as a signal to gather clans. In this piece, Bailey reconciles the “unacknowledged cultural hybridities” that her and many Black Americans contain, while reimagining a present in which the tradition remained a symbol of unity rather than hatred.
