This February in New York City, two very different performance programs reinforced the versatility and timelessness of Cunningham’s work. Lyon Opera Ballet paired BIPED (1999) with Christos Papadopoulos's Mycelium (2023). The contrast of these dances moved BIPED into a contemporary conversation that underscored Cunningham’s reputation as a risk-taking formalist. The following week, the Trisha Brown Dance Company presented Dancing with Bob: Rauschenberg, Brown & Cunningham Onstage, featuring Trisha Brown’s Set and Reset (1983) and Cunningham’s Travelogue (1977). In this post-modern pairing, nostalgia was in the air, and audiences were reminded of (or surprised by) Merce’s enduring humor, wit, and sense of play. Read the New York Times review by Gia Kourlas. These reconstructions take a village to come to life, and they continue to shed new light on Merce’s artistic legacy. Congratulations to everyone involved!
