Woman who paid £67k to clone her dog had to thaw him out after freezing him

The couple who cloned their beloved dead dog have spoken about the horrifying moment they had to thaw him out.

Laura Jacques and her partner Richard Remede had already sent off cells from their late boxer dog to hopefully start the cloning process, but news came back they were contaminated.

Unfortunately for Laura she admitted she had thought it was best to put her dog in the freezer to preserve his body, but found out she would need to thaw him out to retrieve another sample of his DNA.

Speaking on This Morning , the pair, who have spent £67,000 on two puppies identical to boxer dog Dylan said: "I had no idea you could [clone] a dog once they had died.

"I started to look into it just to torment myself. It said 'If your dog has died do not put them in the freezer'. That's when I realised you could do it after your dog had died."

She went on to explain to a horrified Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby: "It took ages to thaw him out. He wasn't even fully thawed out when I took the second lot of cells.

"I was still in shock at that point, I was still in total shock. I just focused on what I had to do and just treated it as though it wasn't my Dylan."

They explained that the pups will spend another seven months in quarantine before being allowed into the UK, and Laura added they were also hoping to adopt the surrogate mums as well.

The couple from Skipton in North Yorkshire were left heartbroken when their dog Dylan died of a heart attack six months ago.

The pooch had previously been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour.

They are the first British couple to have their pet dog cloned using a process pioneered by the South Korea biotech firm Sooam.

This is the first time that anyone has had a dead pet cloned, the Telegraph reports.

An RSPCA spokesman said of the cloning: “There is also a body of evidence that cloned animals frequently suffer physical ailments such as tumours, pneumonia and abnormal growth patterns."
