Improvisation is a major element of the work of an organist and Bach wanted to try out all kinds of new things and I think most of the organ works originated actually as improvisations that were written up at a later point.
So, improvisation is a very important element also in Bach’s compositional process and this kind of experience stayed with Bach throughout his life.
