ANN ARBOR -- Injured Michigan forward Mitch McGary is now participating in occasional full-speed workouts alongside a coach, according to coach John Beilein.

It might not sound like much, but Monday’s update is the first discernible progress reported by Beilein since McGary’s “lower back condition” emerged in early September.

“For the first time now he’s done some workouts,” Beilein said. “He’s had more repetitions in practice over the last 10 days. He’s had repetitions and he looks very good and we’re going to continue increasing his repetitions.”

McGary’s on-court workouts are still limited to non-contact, individual work, according to Beilein.

Previously, McGary was essentially limited to shooting drills.

“Over this last week, about every other day, we’ve had him for short workouts,” Beilein said. “He’s been good, just slowly getting him in shape.”

McGary, a preseason Associated Press All-American, missed Michigan's entire preseason and last Friday’s season-opener against UMass-Lowell.

The sophomore averaged 14.3 points and 10.7 rebounds per game in last year's NCAA tournament.

A timeline for McGary’s return remains undetermined.

“I don’t have a date,” Beilein said. “I think the date will be when we really feel he’s as close to being in shape to get in there and really play.”

Last Monday Beilein was asked on The Huge Show, a statewide-syndicated radio broadcast, if he’d consider “shutting (McGary) down the entire non-conference schedule if you had to?”

Beilein replied, “If it came to that.”

Michigan is 1-0 on the young season and schedule to face South Carolina State (1-1) at Crisler Center on Tuesday (7 p.m., Big Ten Digital Network).
