The major subunits of the Minnesota Library Association included divisions, sections, and round tables. The purpose of the divisions was to promote the development of libraries, library services, and librarianship within and for a particular type of library. Sections were devoted to particular functions or aspects of librarianship which had relevance for more than one type of library. Round tables were formed to promote the development of types of libraries and aspects of librarianship whose representatives among the association's members were too few to form divisions or sections.

First known as the College and University Libraries Section, it was renamed the Academic Libraries Section in 1965 and later became the Academic Research Libraries Division. The division was also a chapter of the Association of College and Research Libraries of the American Library Association.
