WB Games | Avalanche - MobyGames (original) (raw)

Avalanche Software was a video game development company that specialized in producing games on home console platforms. The company was formed in October 1995 by four lead programmers from Sculptured Software. Over the years, Avalanche grew slowly but steadily, and employed more than 100 people.

When the company was young, they concentrated on porting games to console platforms. As time has passed, they created a set of proprietary tools to develop games for multiple platforms simultaneously. Avalanche produced games for every major platform since 1995, including the Super Nintendo, Genesis, Playstation, N64, PC, Dreamcast, PlayStation 2 and Xbox.

On 19 April 2005, Buena Vista Games announced to have acquired the studio.

In 2011, Avalanche became an internal development studio of Disney Interactive Studios located in Salt Lake City, Utah (USA). Next to many titles based on Disney licenses, in its last year the studio was best known for developing the Disney Infinity franchise. On 10th May 2016 Disney announced the studio would be closed.

On 24 January 2017, the studio and its game engine were acquired and re-opened by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, with John Blackburn returning as the company's head.

It is not to be confused with Avalanche Studios AB.
