HISTORY by Gil Hoffman:TheGulf, Florida & Alabama Railway was chartered on February 6, 1911 in Florida for 99 years, and acquired the railroad of the Southern States Lumber Company, extending from Cantonment, FL to Local, AL, 64.0 miles, late in 1911. The first section of road was put into operation on January 1, 1913, and opened as a common carrier on the same date. The company was given a grant from the City of Pensacola comprising three city blocks of waterfront for piers, warehouses, etc. In 1922 the name was changed to Muscle Shoals, Birmingham & Pensacola Railway. The road was absorbed into the FRISCO in August 1928. The Gulf, Florida & Alabama was operated in two divisions: Southern Division Pensacola, FL to Mexia, AL, and Northen Division Mexia, AL to Kimbrough, AL. It connected with the Southern Ry., at Kimbrough, AL, the Louisville & Nashville at Atmore, AL, and the Louisville & Nashville and the Pensacola, Mobile & New Orleans at Pensacola, FL. The company granted trackage rights to the Southern States Lumber Company, from Pensacola northward for 90 miles; the Vredenburgh Sawmill Company, between Vredenburgh and Atmore and 50 miles north or south of either junction; Russ & McCaskill, between Barrineau Park, FL and Gateswood, AL, and C. Y. Mayo, from Barrineau Park, FL 120 miles northward. The branch from Gateswood Jct. to Gateswood was leased to Russ & McCaskill. | ||
