Abstract
Objective: To describe the prevalence of overweight and obesity in Mexican adults ≥20 y of age, as well as to describe its trends in the last three Mexican health surveys.
Materials and methods: A sample of 38 208 adults with anthropometric's. The classification to categorize body mass index (BMI) was the World health Organization's (WHO). To define abdominal obesity classification was used the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) data.
Results: The prevalence of overweight and obesity was 71.3% (overweight 38.8% and obesity 32.4%). The prevalence of abdominal adiposity was 74.0%, being higher in women (82.8%) than in men (64.5%). Over the past 12 years the mean annualized BMI percent increase was 1.3%. This increase was higher in the 2000-2006 (1%) than in the 2006-2012 (0.3%) period.
Conclusion: In spite of the deacceleration of the increasing prevalence, there is no evidence to infer that prevalences will decrease in the next years. Thus, public policies for obestiy prevention and control should be strengthened and improved.
