ARIA Albums : The Cat Empire Debuts At No 1 - Noise11.com (original) (raw)

Local act The Cat Empire land their second ARIA Albums Chart No.1 this week with their seventh studio album “Rising with the Sun”, eleven years after they first took out the top spot.

“Rising with the Sun” becomes the 758th No.1 Album in Australia (1965 to 2016) and the 609th for ARIA (1983 to 2016) and the 404th to debut at No.1, plus the second for The Cat Empire, as they previously debuted at No.1 with their second album “Two Shoes” (25th April, 2005), which is also the name of the bands independent record label, so this is now the first time that their record label ‘Two Shoes’ has scored a chart topping album too.

The new No.1 album becomes the fifth by a local act to make it to the top (I am including the ‘Molly’ Soundtrack in that bunch too, as it is a locally made and screened mini-series), of the eight albums to have been to No.1 during 2016 so far, and it becomes the second album to feature the word ‘Rising’ in its title, the other was the John Butler Trio album “April Uprising” (5th April, 2010) and the fifth with a ‘Sun’ appearing, the last was two weeks ago for The Hilltop Hoods with their restrung album, and also the fifth featuring ‘with’ in its title too. “Rising with the Sun” becomes the 194th album by an Australian act to reach the top and the 355th by a Group (local or international).

For the past three weeks the ‘Molly’ TV Soundtrack has remained at No.2, where it is again this week and debuting at No.3 is the fourth studio album for Kendrick Lamar which was a surprise release from last week and is called “Untitled Unmastered” and it becomes his third album to chart here and second Top 10 album, as his last set “To Pimp a Butterfly” (TW-20) debuted and peaked at No.1 51 weeks ago (23rd March, 2015). And other than No.2 this week there are two more albums holding steady, Adele with “25” at No.4 and The Hilltop Hoods with “Drinking from the Sun, Walking Under Stars: Restrung” at No.5.

The third studio album for local act Tonight Alive debuts at No.6 entitled “Limitless”, which becomes their third charting album and second Top 10 entry here, as their last set “The Other Side” debuted and peaked at No.5 in mid-September of 2013. The No.7 debut this week is “The Past Beats Inside Me Like a Second Heartbeat” for local rapper Urthboy, which is his fifth studio and fourth charting album, but more so his first ever Top 10 placing, as he previously peaked as high as No.14 with his last album “Smokey’s Haunt” (Oct 2012).

The remainder of the Top 10 is made up of a couple of last weeks entries “Youth Revival” for Hillsong Young & Free, which is down five to No.8 and then Macklemore & Ryan Lewis drop three places to No.9 with “This Unruly Mess I’ve Made” and returning to the Top 10 at No.10 is Coldplay with “A Head Full of Dreams” for its ninth week within the ten.

UP: With “Stressed Out” for twenty one pilots up to a new peak of No.2 this week, their album “Blurryface” (HP-11) jumps up seven spots to No.14 after which we see The Rubens’ album “Hoops” rebound forty-three spots to land at No.25 and up ten places to No.26 is the INXS compilation “The Very Best”. US country singer Jason Aldean returns at No.30 with his “Old Boots, New Dirt” (HP-13) album thanks to his current tour here and with a Top 60 placing for their cover of ‘Sounds of Silence’, the Disturbed see their album “Immortalized” (HP-1) jump back up thirty-three spots to No.34. Elle King is back up six to No.40 with her “Love Stuff” set, and the classic album “Led Zeppelin IV” jumps up thirty-eight spots to No.42 this week and with tickets recently going on sale for the October tour for Ellie Goulding, her album “Delirium” is back into the Top 50, up eighteen spots this week to No.48.

DOWN: The first of five Top 10 dropouts this week is David Bowie’s compilation “Nothing Has Changed: The Best of” (HP-3, WI10-8) which is down two places to No.11 and becomes his longest running Best of/G.H. set within the Australian Top 10, beating the seven weeks that “ChangesOneBowie” (HP-8×5) achieved in 1976. Another feat achieved this week is Justin Bieber with “Purpose” (HP-1×1, WI10-16) which is also down two spots to No.12 and it has become his longest continual run within the Australian Top 10, but is one week shy of his “My Worlds” Top 10 run of 17 weeks (from three runs within the ten though). Three of last weeks debut within the Top 10 fall out this week, with the No.1 entry from last week for The 1975 “I Like it When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of it” dropping twelve places to No.13, followed by Hands Like Houses and “Dissonants” (7 to 24) and “Hills End” for DMA’s (8 to 27). Sia is down four to No.15 with “This is Acting” and another of last weeks high entries to tumble is Anthrax with “For All Kings”, down seventeen to No.29. “White Light” for The Corrs is down eight to No.33 and falling thirteen places to No.37 is Rihanna with “Anti”, with Chase Rice dropping six to No.45 with “Ignite the Night”. Falling into the lower fifty are Tame Impala (48 to 55), Vance Joy (43 to 58), Jack Garratt (49 to 62), Steel Panther (19 to 63), Nicole Carr (34 to 69), Michael Jackson’s re-packaged “Off the Wall” (17 to 70), Sia and “1000 Forms of Fear” (42 to 72), ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ soundtrack (37 to 74), Celtic Thunder (32 to 76), The Jezabels (45 to 77), ‘Deadpool’ soundtrack (33 to 78), James Bay (27 to 84), David Bowie with “Best of Bowie” (44 to 91) and dropping out of the Top 100 from last weeks fifty are Kelly Clarkson (#23) and the “George Fest” compilation (#41).

Swedish act Miike Snow see their third album “iii” debut at No.18 this week, two places lower than their previous entry, their second album “Happy to You” (HP-16) achieved almost four years ago (26th March, 2012), and this new entry also becomes their second charting entry, as their self-titled debut set failed to chart here, plus this album also contains the current No.47 single “Genghis Khan”.

Australian singer and actor Jon English passed away late on Wednesday this past week, the report coming through on Thursday morning, and this in effect gave his music only one day to sell during the current chart week (Friday to Thursday), and so for his best of “Six Ribbons – The Ultimate Collection” to debut at No.23 this week means that all of its sales were in the last day of the chart sales week. This becomes Jon’s fourth hits compilation to chart, his last being “The Best of – 20th Anniversary Edition” (HP-68, late May 1993) and his last Top 50 placing was with his second best of “Modern English” (HP-27, mid-Jan 1984), so we should see this album climb next week as it gets a full week of sales.

The sixth studio album for US singer/songwriter Ray LaMontagne gives him his third successive Top 50 debuting album, and fourth to chart here entitled “Ouroboros”, which enters at No.44 this week. Previously he has made the Top 50 with “Supernova” (HP-49, May 2014) and “God Willin’ & The Creek Don’t Rise” (HP-41, August 2010), whilst he first charted here with his third set “Gossip in the Grain” (HP-73, Oct 2008). The final Top 50 entry this week comes in at No.47 and is “Written in Scars” for Italian/English singer Jack Savoretti, his fourth studio album and first to chart here in Australia.

Lower 50: Jason DeRulo returns to the chart at No.51 with his fourth album “Everything is 4” (HP-12) and just as she started her tour here Madonna returns at No.53 with the No.1 album from this week last year “Rebel Heart” (16th March, 2015). The Courtney Barnett album is back up seventeen places to No.57 and for the first time the current Panic! At the Disco album “Death of a Bachelor” rises back up, climbing twelve to No.60 this week. Foals return at No.61 with “What Went Down” and the G.H.’s for Queen is back in at No.68, with further returning album being “Anything Goes” for Florida Georgia Line (#80), “The Positions” for Gang of Youths (#85), “Empires” by Hillsong United (#87), “Nine” by Samantha Jade (#89), “Cinematic” for Illy (#90), the self-titled Flume album (#92) and the final returning album is “Bon Jovi Greatest Hits” at No.95.

The 46th studio album for 83 year old US country legend Loretta Lynn debuts at No.54 entitled “Full Circle”, and it also becomes her first ever studio album to chart in Australia, as she once charted back in 1983 with a compilation “The Very Best of” alongside Conway Twitty (HP-53, March 1983), and this is her first studio album in twelve years also.

Another act who has not released an album in awhile debuts at No.59, the Violent Femmes with their ninth studio album (and first in sixteen years) “We Can Do Anything”, which becomes the bands tenth charted album in Australia (8 studios and 2 best of {LP#8 didn’t chart here}), and becomes the bands first entry this century and in over twenty years, as they last charted here with their seventh album “Rock!!!!!” (HP-30, late March 1995).

The debut album for local DJ, Producer and songwriter Elizabeth Rose entitled “Intra” enters at No.66 this week, and a few places lower at No.71 is the debut album “The First Time” for US country singer Kelsea Ballerini, after which there is the No.75 entry for Lapsley entitled “Long Way Home” which is also the UK singers debut album. Finally new at No.82 is the fourth album for L.A. based comedy duo Ninja Sex Party entitled “Under the Covers”, which is an album of cover songs done in the duo’s usual wacky style.
