A explosion blew out the main entrance to the American Cultural Center in the city of Taegu tonight, killing one South Korean and injuring at least three others, officials said.

An American Embassy spokesman in Seoul, David Fitzgerald, said the blast was believed to have been caused by some sort of bomb.

He said the one American employed at the center was not in the building when the blast occurred between 9:30 and 9:45 P.M.

Mr. Fitzgerald said the explosion killed a South Korean outside the building and seriously injured two others. A security guard in the center was cut by flying glass and a second guard escaped injury, he said.

The main doors to the center and a second set of doors leading to the library inside were knocked down by the explosion and there was considerable damage to windows and glass partitions, Mr. Fitzgerald said.
