DAVIS CUP

Becker to Manage German Team

Boris Becker is taking over as manager of Germany's Davis Cup team with the task of restoring it to the level it enjoyed when he led the team as a player.

Becker was selected yesterday to replace Niki Pilic, a Yugoslav who managed the team for 10 years.

''When someone as successful as him offers his services to German tennis, this is an exceptional stroke of luck,'' Jens-Peter Hecht, a German Tennis Federation spokesman, said of Becker.

The former Davis Cup player Carl-Uwe Steeb, who helped Germany win its first trophy in 1988, was appointed team captain, also replacing Pilic.

Pilic led Germany to Davis Cup triumphs in 1988, 1989 and 1993, but his job was in jeopardy after the team lost to France in last year's quarterfinals.

Germany won a place in the elite World Group last month in a relegation battle, defeating Mexico by 5-0, with Becker the leading player on the team.

Becker, a three-time Wimbledon champion, is gradually retiring from tennis. He has announced that he will no longer play in Grand Slam tournaments.
