A film about a film, where another film was made, whose lead actress vanished from celluloid.
Martiros Vartanov‘s first film, entitled The Last Film, was shot at UCLA with an old Bolex movie camera on 16mm black and white Kodak film. This experimental short documentary film is dedicated to Sergei Parajanov and Mikhail Vartanov, stars Taguhi Vardanyan, and features the music of composer Armen Boyamyan.
The Last Film won the Best Experimental Film Award at the Prague Film Festival and was a semi finalist at the Student Academy Awards®.
The world premiere of The Last Film was held by The Academy ® at LACMA in Hollywood with the US premiere of Parajanov’s restored Sayat Nova (The Color of Pomegranates),and was released by Criterion. You can see The Last Film on the Criterion Blu-ray/DVD of the restored Color of Pomegranates or steam it on The Criterion Channel.
The Last Film is the first installment in Martiros M. Vartanov’s experimental UCLA trilogy with Our Turn and The Resurrection of Sayat Nova.
