International Diabetes Center

Ensuring that every person with diabetes receives the best possible care

Founded in 1967, International Diabetes Center® is known internationally for its experience and expertise in patient education, professional training, research, and models for patient-centered care and quality improvement.

We believe in a patient-centered, team approach to diabetes care. With a focus on the relationship between the patient, clinician and educator to ensure that each receives the information and tools needed to improve patient health. We translate new research findings into clinical practice and discover innovative ways to use technology to improve diabetes care. And we continue to shape the community – and the world – to help people live well with diabetes.

Key areas

Research

Research keeps us at the forefront of diabetes treatment and technology. Working with National Institutes of Health, the health care industry and research foundations, we have conducted hundreds of research studies over the past 40 years. These include the landmark Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT), the Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes (ACCORD) trial and the Glycemia Reduction Approaches in Diabetes: A comparative Effectiveness Study (GRADE). Learn more about our diabetes research or see our current studies.

Professional Education and Consulting

Our education programs provide practical, evidence-based information, learning activities and educational tools to expand knowledge and improve patient care. We have a wealth of real-world expertise to share with health care professionals and industry organizations. Learn about our programs we’ve provided locally and in more than 30 countries.

Patient Services and Clinical Resources

Our diabetes education team and health psychologist partner with our clinics and hospitals to deliver programs and services tailored to the needs of patients and their families. We provide psychosocial therapy and an education program that includes an evidence-based curriculum. With an emphasis on positive goal-setting and motivation, we help close the gap between learning about and living well with diabetes. Patients 18 years and older can be seen with a written referral from their primary care provider. Education topics include insulin initiation and adjustment, pumps, newly diagnosed and gestational diabetes.

We’ve developed tools for clinicians such as the screen for early eating disorder signs (SEEDS) in people with type 1 diabetes. These clinical resources are available to all clinicians.
