Lower Unit Sales, Fewer Titles (original) (raw)

Editor’s note: The following five pages constitute a correction to last week’s article on hardcover bestsellers for 2011. Due to clerical errors in the handling of information correctly supplied by the publisher, the previous article omitted six bestsellers, three of which are now in the Top 15 chart (including Steve Jobs at #1), with a total of five making our revised Top 30, including books by David McCullough and Chris Matthews. In addition, Susan Orlean’s Rin Tin Tin is now on the list, as is From This Moment On by Shania Twain. Also, three trade paperbacks were mistakenly included in hardcover listings last week, and they are now removed. And one other addition: in our Trade Paperback listing (which can be found online here), Little Bee by Chris Cleave is now included. PW deeply regrets these errors.

For both fiction and nonfiction hardcover titles, name-brand recognition is the key to bestseller success. While that is not new, the 2011 annual chart had fewer than usual new players. In fiction, there were two novelists debuting in the top 30. George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, with five titles, was perhaps the most successful franchise last year.

Martin’s A Dance with Dragons is #5, with sales of about 750,000. Random House reports that last year his books sold about 8.4 million copies across all formats, including print, digital, and audio. The other newcomer to the top 30 is Paula McLain (The Paris Wife); she also had the second-longest-running fiction bestseller last year, with 23 appearances on PW’s weekly top 15 list. Four other novelists made a first appearance on this end-of-year chart. All were first fiction; they are The Night Circus, Dollhouse, The Art of Fielding, and The Tiger’s Wife.

All other authors are veteran chart occupiers, and many regularly have multiple titles in the top slots. James Patterson had seven top-sellers, with combined sales of about 2.4 million, making him the leader in the competitive hardcover fiction race. Janet Evanovich had two winners in the top 10, Smokin’ Seventeen and Explosive Eighteen; their combined sales of more than 1.4 million makes her the female winner for hardcover fiction. Nora Roberts, Danielle Steel, and Clive Cussler each had three books topping 100,000 and more. Check the lists for many more authors with two books on the chart.

In nonfiction, the operative words are celebrity and renown, with books by or about familiar faces in the news, including politicians, talk show hosts, thespians—and the revolutionary tech guru who died in the fall. Walter Isaacson’s bio of Steve Jobs, with sales of more than 2,246,000 copies, was the most popular hardcover by a margin of more than 2:1. The other familiar faces in hardcover nonfiction included Tina Fey, Ellen DeGeneres, Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Mindy Kaling, Lady Gaga, Gwyneth Paltrow, Rob Lowe, the Kardashians, and the irrepressible Betty White, not to mention Katie Couric, Bill Maher, Bill O’Reilly, Glenn Beck, and Suze Orman. Religion leaders such as Joel Osteen, Billy Graham, and Joyce Meyer land their books in the top 30. There were two books about Navy SEALs (one just missed the top 30) and four featuring a Kennedy. Politicos such as Dick Cheney, Condoleezza Rice, Bill Clinton, and Herman Cain were bestseller winners.

A popular category on these year-end charts is cookbooks and also some advice for healthier lifestyles. Three on the latter subject, The 17 Day Diet, The Dukan Diet, and The 4-Hour Body, are in the top 30. Paula Deen’s Southern Cooking Bible was the most popular food book, with sales of more than 372,000. Guy Fieri Food, Pat Neely’s Celebration Cookbook, and Buddy Valastro’s Baking with the Cake Boss were also tasty bestsellers. And Gwyneth Paltrow’s My Father’s Daughter featured recipes for family togetherness.

One nonfiction book was the benefactor of a new happening—going viral. Akashic, a first-timer on our annual charts, has a book at #7—Go the F**k to Sleep by Adam Mansbach. When word on the book hit the Internet, Akashic had to get the book out faster than planned and it became the gift book of 2011.

One unfortunate trend that continues is that fewer books make these end-of-year charts. In 2011, 113 fiction titles and 83 nonfiction books achieved the 100,000+ level. In 2010, the fiction number was 126; in 2009, 130 and in 2008, 156. The nonfiction drop was a bit steeper. In 2010, there were 108 titles, more than the 91 in 2009, but fewer that the 132 in 2008. Bestseller pundits would bet on even lower figures in the next year. They might also guess that the e-book explosion could be the culprit.

The Usual Disclaimer

As in previous years, all the calculations on the following pages are based on shipped-and-billed figures supplied by publishers for new books with sales of 100,000+; all reflect only 2011 domestic retail sales for print books. We asked publishers to take into account returns through mid-February; it would be safe to assume that not all did. Sales figures on all these pages should not be considered final. For many books, especially those published in the final third of the year, returns were still being calculated. Perhaps the beauty of the e-book figures (www.publishersweekly.com/ebooksFF2012) is that they are direct to consumer and not returnable Please note that e-books priced at less than $5 were deemed ineligible.
