Queens Free Summer Outdoor Theater 2024 QNS NYC

Summer is in full swing. A number of community groups, some in collaboration with the NYC Parks Department and oftentimes with some measure of government funding, have put together a summer full of free summer theater in the parks. The free theatre events listed below are designed for young and old alike and they're FREE.

Editor's Note - ONLY ASTERISKED events have been updated to 2024. Pay attention to the performance dates / years. We will be updating / adding this summer theater report through the summer into September, so check back periodically for updates which you can note by the date changing above.

Summary of What to Expect When Scrolling Down 2024

Many of the free summer theatrical productions in Queens are performed by Hip to Hip Theater Company in Woodside and sponsored by the Theater Development Fund and hosted by the NYC Parks. At present they have mapped out their summer program which starts in August.

The theater performances are scheduled to be held outdoors at various parks around the borough including Socrates Sculpture Park in Astoria / LIC, the Voelker Orth Museum in Flushing, Sunnyside Gardens Park, Cunningham Park, Gantry State Park in LIC, Flushing Meadows Corona Park and Crocheron Park. While no Hip to Hip Theater performances are scheduled for Athens Square Park in Astoria, they oftentimes find a way to make concerts and sporadically ancient and modern Greek theater performances possible.

• The following is a schedule of Greek Tuesdays summer concerts at Athens Square Park. These used to be organized by the Athens Square Committee, wherein, every Tuesday in July, August & September from 7 pm unitl 9 pm, there were concerts featuring Greek music. Astoria Park - Free Summer Fireworks in Astoria Queens 2023

• Thursday, June 29, 2023 from 7.30 - 10 pm - The Astoria Park Fireworks returns to the Great Lawn overlooking the East River. This fireworks display is also put together by the Grucci Brothers, the same fireworks company doing the Macy's 4th of July fireworks along the East River on July 4th, in NYC. The Astoria Park Fireworks festivities begin at 7.30 pm and the fireworks usually go off around dusk which is about 9.30 pm. The best viewing location is from the Great Lawn, but be advised that each year these fireworks become more popular. The Astoria Park fireworks in Queens provides a pastorial view from Astoria Park right alongside the East River. FREE_._

Location. The Queens Museum is located in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, just south of the Arthur Ashe USTA Tennis complex, and just west of the Unisphere.

In the past the Queens Museum hosted what they called the Passport series which was a combination of foreign films with dance & theater performances of that culture. The program was discontinued in 2019, and sadly, hasn't been revived since.

The Queens Museum has DISCONTINUED the Passport Thursdays beginning the summer of 2019 which generally ran in the summer months of June, July and August where they showcased foreign cultures via film in tandem with live musical and dance performances.

• Friday - Sunday, August 4 - 13, 2023 beginning at various times - Festival of Cinema [formerly the Kew Gardens Film Festival]. They're showing a mix of independent films including documentary, drama, shorts and comedy.
  • Brief History. This festival started in Kew Gardens in its inaugural year in 2017, when the festival was held at Kew Gardens Cinemas at 81-05 Lefferts Blvd in Kew Gardens. The festival moved to Forest Hills in 2019 and I think renamed itself at the same time when it was shown at two theaters - 1) at United Artists Midway 9 at 108-22 Queens Boulevard in Forest Hills, and 2) at the Queens Museum in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. This year it remains in place at the UA Midway only.

• Hasn't Been Performed since Prepandemic _ Note Date _ Thursday, August 8, 2019 beginning at 6.30 pm [kids] & 7 pm / Hip to Hip Theater Free - A Midsummers Night Dream - The play entwines three separate groups into one convoluted comedy with Puck as the protagonist in the center of all the chaos. It opens with Pericles life in danger as he is asked to decipher a riddle, the answer to which will result in his death. So he asks for time to think about it and then flees. In the course of his flight he wins a contest and the prized princess, impregnates her, loses her in childbirth, and goes on to other adventures before reuniting with his daughter and wife [who was found alive swept to shore].
