This weekend summer begins in earnest. A number of community groups in collaboration with the NYC Parks Department and frequently some measure of government funding, have put together a summer full of films and free summer movies in the parks. The foreign films and free movies listed below are designed for young and old alike and they're MOSTLY FREE.

Location. Astoria Park is located in the northwest section of Queens, between the East River and 19th Street and between Ditmars Blvd and Hoyt Avenue which runs parallel to the RFK Bridge. The movies are shown on the Great Lawn which is off 19th Street just north of the swimming pool.

- Sunday, June 26, 2022 from 4.30 - 6.30 pm - Seven Short Prideful Films. Seven short films in celebration of Pride Month. Free.
- August 3 - 13, 2022 - Asian American International Film Festival. This is being held at the Asia Society & Museum on the UES of Manhattan. Last year they had a reduced venue due to CoVid, mostly streamed video via Lincoln Center, sprinkled with a few live events held at the Asia Society on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. This year [2022] they're back at the Asia Society with live events and in person screenings.

- Brief History. In prior years the Asian American Film Festival was held at the Village East Cinema, the Asia Society on the Upper East Side, Muses 35 & Karaoke and Asian American Research Institute CUNY. For the past few years there hasn't been any Queens screenings. The screenings in 2017 were done as an adjunct by the Asian International Film Festival in Manhattan.

Location. The Queens Museum is located in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, just south of the Arthur Ashe USTA Tennis complex, and just west of the Unisphere.

In the past the Queens Museum hosted what they called the Passport series which was a combination of foreign films with dance & theater performances of that culture. The program was discontinued in 2019, and hasn't been revived since. The following is one example of the retired program.

- At 7 pm "get your body moving with Masala Bhangra: Bollywood dance workout classes from 7 – 7.45 pm on the front lawn of the museum starting at 8 pm [programs will take place inside the museum in event of rain].
- At 8 pm Road (Dev Benegal, 2010, 95min, Hindi with English subtitles) about "Vishnu, a restless young man, itches to escape his father’s faltering hair oil business. - Friday - Sunday, August 4 - 13, 2023 beginning at various times - Festival of Cinema [formerly the Kew Gardens Film Festival]. They're showing a mix of independent films including documentary, drama, shorts and comedy.
- Brief History. This festival started in Kew Gardens in its inaugural year in 2017, when the festival was held at Kew Gardens Cinemas at 81-05 Lefferts Blvd in Kew Gardens. The festival moved to Forest Hills in 2019 and I think renamed itself at the same time when it was shown at two theaters - 1) at United Artists Midway 9 at 108-22 Queens Boulevard in Forest Hills, and 2) at the Queens Museum in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. This year it remains in place at the UA Midway only.

NOTHING FILM-WISE FOR THE GENERAL PUBLIC IS PLANNED AS OF THIS POST ON 6.29.23. Use the Queens theater link at the top of this page to see a couple of Shakespearean plays planned at this location in August of 2023.
- * Closed _ Saturday, September 16, 2017 from 6 - 10 pm - Flicks in the Garden - Open to the Public. Free summer movies in Sunnyside. Organized by Sunnyside Gardens Park. I believe Flicks in the Garden was not shown in Sunnyside Gardens Park in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and has not been scheduled for 2022.
- * Closed Following 2020 Festival _ OLD _ NOTE DATES / YEAR _ Friday & Saturday, July 13 & 14, 2018 - Boulevard Film Festival will show over two dozen independent films at various times. They went virtual in 2020 and not sure they whether they did anything in 2021.
- Location. At Thalia Theater 41-17 Greenpoint Avenue & at Sanger Hall at 48-30 Skillman Avenue which used to be Murphy's Bar. $10 / viewing program.

- * Closed _ In 2016 there were films shown at Sargeant Collins Park at Broadway & 58th Street by the Northern Woodside Coalition. I'm pretty sure this program didn't continue in 2017 and haven't heard anything for 2018. If this changes, I will post an update as new information becomes available.

- OLD _ NOTE DATE / YEAR _ Friday, July 23, 2021 from 8.30 - 11 pm - The War with Grandpa - NYC Parks Department describes the film as the following, " ... Sixth-grader Peter (Oakes Fegley) is pretty much your average kid—he likes gaming, hanging with his friends and his beloved pair of Air Jordans. But when his recently widowed grandfather Ed (Robert De Niro) moves in with Peter’s family, the boy is forced to give up his most prized possession of all, his bedroom. Unwilling to let such an injustice stand, Peter devises a series of increasingly elaborate pranks to drive out the interloper, but Grandpa Ed won’t go without a fight.
