The National Reserve Bank of Tonga (Reserve Bank) was established on 1 July 1989 as the central bank of Tonga.

The principal objectives of the Reserve Bank shall be to maintain internal and external monetary stability, promote financial stability and promote a sound and efficient financial system. The Reserve Bank shall conduct its activities in a manner that supports macroeconomic stability and economic growth.

Foreign Reserves Statistics for July 2024

Tonga's official foreign reserves declined in July 2024 by 15.3million,predominantlydrivenbyoutflowsforimportpaymentsandoffshoreinvestment.Thelevelofforeignreserveswas15.3 million, predominantly driven by outflows for import payments and offshore investment. The level of foreign reserves was 15.3million,predominantlydrivenbyoutflowsforimportpaymentsandoffshoreinvestment.Thelevelofforeignreserveswas909.1 million at the end of July 2024, sufficient to cover 10.5 months of imports, and remains above the IMF's recommended threshold of 7.5 months. In year-ended terms, the foreign reserves decreased by $36.1 million.

Reserve Bank’s August 2024 Monetary Policy Will Promote Greater Access to Finance

The August 2024 MPS maintains the current monetary policy that keeps a watchful eye against inflation threats and supports economic recovery through maintaining the statutory required deposit at 15% and the zero-percent monetary policy rate while considering easing exchange control requirements and maintaining an exchange rate regime that supports greater macroeconomic stability. In collaboration with Government and other relevant stakeholders, the NRBT is introducing new financing instruments such as a concessional credit facility and a partial credit guarantee scheme to boost private sector financing towards stronger growth recovery in 2025, particularly fostering access to financing for underserved and climate change-vulnerable sectors.
