Liverpool born John Murphy began scoring movies at the age of 25. In 2000, following the success of Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, he moved to Los Angeles.
Since then the self-taught musician has worked with some of the industry's most
respected and luminary filmmakers, including Danny Boyle, Guy Ritchie, Stephen
Frears, Matthew Vaughn and Michael Mann, producing film scores as prominent and
diverse as Kick-Ass, Sunshine, Miami Vice, Snatch and the seminal 28 Days Later.
After Kick-Ass Murphy set up the record label Taped Noise and began work on several
non-movie projects. The first of these, ʻanonymous rejected filmscoreʼ, will be released
early in 2014.
Murphyʼs music has been featured in commercials for Nike, Louis Vuitton, Audi,
Samsung, Dior, Google and Apple.

“I love John Murphy scores (Lock Stock and Two SMoking barrels, 28 days later/weeks later, Sunshine, etc) they stand alone as one of the more emotional characters in each film. Prominent cues start out very slow and introspective, growing and evolving into more complex beings able to explain their emotions with each note and progression perfectly. At least to me this is how it seems. Then someone comes along and remixes, giving this particular entity a bit more of an edge. I love.”

“At the intersection of movie trailers and music, what does John Murphy’s 'Sunshine (Adagio in D Minor)' tell us about Alfonso Cuaron's highly anticipated space drifter?”
Joe Reid - Tribeca Film
“Three reasons why Kick-Ass 2 doesn’t kick ass: 1) No Nic Cage; 2) No Jane Goldman/Matthew Vaughn creative naughtiness; 3) No John Murphy on the soundtrack. The self-taught Scouse composer has been hot stuff since he delivered his 28 Days Later score and the neck hair-raising themes he wrote for Sunshine. Lionsgate thought he was hot stuff too and commissioned him to rework ‘Sunshine (Adagio in D Minor)’ for Kick-Ass - the result was ‘Strobe’, a searing two-minute anthem heard as Hit Girl rescues Big Daddy from the warehouse. Fans wanted a longer cut and the Strobe EP is Murphy’s response, expanding his most famous cut to a blistering seven minutes and backing it with atmospheric trip-hop.”
George Bass - Drowned In Sound
“Best New Tracks: John Murphy "Sandman" John Murphy is an English film composer and self-taught multi-instrumentalist. Apparently when he's not writing breathtaking scores for films (see 28 Weeks Later), he's creating best new tracks like "Sandman." Off Murphy's forthcoming Strobe EP, "Sandman" is not your prototypical best new track. It's a sprawling, ambient trip hop piece that plays perfectly for dark 4 a.m. chill out moments, driving on all-but-abandoned highways, or any moment in which you feel like being "extra alone." John Murphy's Strobe EP is out September 1st via Taped Noise. You can hear Murphy's music in Kick-Ass, Snatch, Millions, Friday After Next, Mean Machine, and several other films.”
