The cup success caps an amazing season for the club given that it is also the first time they have taken that trophy as well. It is the fourth Romanian Cup to be won by coach Ioan Andone after he previously tasted glory three times with Dinamo București. It had been 14 years since the final was played out by two teams from outside București and for the first time in 13 years a team from outside that city claimed the trophy. The last provincial team to achieve this was Petrolul Ploiești when they overcame Rapid București in 1995. The match was an even contest throughout even though CFR opened the scoring in the 49th minute when the Argentinian Diego Ruiz sent a spectacular shot in from 17 metres. Nine minutes later, Ciprian Dănălache equalised with a nice volley from inside the penalty area for a Unirea side also making their first appearance in the final. The decisive moment came in the 64th minute when Portuguese striker António Semedo made it 2-1 from close range after Unirea's goalkeeper Bogdan Stelea had saved his first effort. Unirea had some fine opportunities to level again but CFR goalkeeper Eduard Stăncioiu held firm to avert extra time.
