Kevin Thomas Los Angeles Times Lies & Alibis isn't as jaunty as its title and dilutes a serviceable premise for a mild diversion that just lapses into confusion. Test T I watched this on DVD recently. I quite like Steve Coogan's comedy at times, so I had high expectations for this film. It's not terrible, and the outlandish business of providing an alibi service sounds interesting. The cast are a talented group and the locations are pleasant, so you would think this film had all the right ingredient's for success. Sadly, there are some serious issues with the recipe, and the film that has emerged is quite plain. It plays more like a lightweight TV movie, than something you would see in the cinema. The story starts off ok, but steadily gets more and more complicated until I found myself loosing interest in it, and the repetative sound track also started to irritate me towards the end. The film's main failing however is to have signed up a comedy star to play a mainly serious lead role. Yes, there are odd quips littered around in the script, but nothing really to allow Steve's talent to shine through. As a result, he looks out of place, delivering straight dialogue which is just too ordinary for him. Whilst the film is watchable, I was disappointed, and can't recommend it. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/25/24 Full Review anthony b More cool and clever than funny. Steve Coogan is one of my favorite actors (comedic or otherwise) and does a fantastic job in this film as the lead man, especially since he very rarely gets top billing. Lies & Alibis isn't likely to wow many but it also isn't likely disappoint either. It was engrossing, fun, and at its best reminded me of an Elmore Leonard adaptation... Think Get Shorty light.
