Rami A Harrison Ford and Christopher Plummer make a fantastic team despite the dull story. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/15/24 Full Review J. Manuel G Critics and audiences alike fell over themselves to find fault with this movie, but I think it was just made in the wrong era. Past the heyday of the Weepie and past-prime for World War II action films, it probably faced jaded viewers no longer attuned to the values of heroism and self-sacrifice. In that sense, the movie is a kind of Rorschach test - what you see depends on what you are. Of course both the love story and the action plot are unbelievable, but no more so than most films made since the 1930s to the present day. Anyone who ever had a wisp of a real-life experience along even vaguely similar lines can readily fall in with the converging story trajectories and identify with the three characters, each noble in their own way. I feel like watching Hanover Street every few years, and it never fails to engage me. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/01/23 Full Review Steve D Forgettable but entertaining. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/15/23 Full Review jelisije j A movie that didn't get quite interesting until its last 30 minutes, but what can you expect from a love story. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review matthew d Peter Hyams' romantic war melodrama Hanover Street (1979) is tender and engaging. Fun espionage and war action with plenty of humor. They don't even tell you who the mole was that got several spies killed! All the neat dramatic plot points end up going nowhere just to get some fun kills against the Germans. It's a beautiful film and an entertaining movie. But Hanover Street never quite reaches romantic perfection or deeper characterization. Harrison Ford is handsome and actually acts like he cares. His nonchalant hero has real heart. Christopher Plummer is a neat third wheel in this searing love triangle. He's handsome, charming, and a cool spy. Lesley-Anne Down is drop dead gorgeous and a dazzling love interest. I wish they fleshed out her character more and it needed a stronger ending. Composer John Barry's score is sizzling with romantic feeling and soft melodies. Barry delivers a simply marvelous score. I think Barry's music is so fantastic that he elevates the movie into a memorable romance drama. In short, Hanover Street is sure to please, but you will not find it to be the greatest romance picture ever. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I found the bombing mission scenes to be disappointing. One of the crew continually making bad jokes about not wanting to be there and the bad blood between Harrison's character and the leader of the squadron before missions didn't seem at all realistic. Memphis Belle is about twenty times better. Nice Kublewagens that had VW gas caps. The romance wasn't all that convincing either. Should have been more like: "Okay, that was fun but I may get caught soon so let's stop doing this." Rather than the "true love" they tried to pass off.
