Critics Consensus
Besides being a treat for Wilco fans, I Am Trying to Break Your Heart also exposes the workings of a profit-driven music industry.

Also, the film is helped tremendously by some great music from Wilco, and a ironic, triumphant twist of real-lif Rated: 4/5 Oct 1, 2005 Full Review Read all reviews
harrison r Jeff Tweedy wrote some good songs, and the black and footage is beautiful. Nothing much else happens in this movie though. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I am not a fan of Wilco but I did enjoy this. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member yes, i do love wilco, but it's a great look at a fantastic band going through a very pivotal point in their career. a rare dvd where the audio commentary is actually worth listening to all the way through. yes... the ending does seem a bit... trite, but ah well... forgive it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member An interesting peek into the music industry (for Wilco fans and non-Wilco fans alike). A story that shows that there are still some real artists out there, putting their integrity above profit and commercial success. It's made all the better by the fact that the events occurring in the film were pure surprises. Reprise Records must still be kicking themselves for letting what became an immensely acclaimed and successful album go. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member A must see for Wilco fans. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member One of my favorites. I love Wilco, and it's a fantastic film. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Read all reviews

Synopsis This insightful documentary chronicles the tumultuous recording and release of the band Wilco's 2002 album "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot." A bold departure from the group's earlier releases, recording it nearly broke up the band, and when it was completed, their label refused to release it and eventually dumped Wilco from their roster. With the album completed, the band turned to the Internet to get attention for the record, which was eventually released to widespread success and critical acclaim.
