Critics Consensus

It doesn't pursue its subversive premise as far as it should, but The Joneses benefits from its timely satire of consumer culture -- as well as a pair of strong performances from David Duchovny and Demi Moore.

Jeffrey P The stakes are low and the depth shallow in this routine comedy about creepy salespeople, with a twist and some freshness to it. It does become mildly interesting and somewhat informative as it progresses and makes you start thinking “do people actually do this? Is this how trends start?” It does deserve some credit for making people aware that all their ‘friends’ may not be what they seem, and who’s really at the source of many of their problems and heartache... the people who are in the same vein as advertisers. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/25/24 Full Review David W Arguably ahead of its time, The Joneses is built on a pertinent and intriguing premise about the nature of 21st century marketing. While the premise is great, the execution by both the production team and the cast was disappointing. It verges on being so bad it's good, but doesn't have any self-awareness of its hammed up presentation to reach that point. Having seen this once, I have no desire to watch it again. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/22/24 Full Review Courtney K this was cute enough; definitely an interesting concept. i agree with another reviewer who said they wished there was a little more backstory to the people who made up the Joneses... it felt like something was missing, but just not sure what. overall not a bad watch though. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/19/23 Full Review Tiffany G There is a good message in this movie and it has a cute ending, but ultimately I think that this movie had the potential to be so much better than it turned out. For starters, they didn't do much building when it came to the characters and I kept feeling like I was missing a big chunk of information about how these people ended up in the situation they were in. We really needed a back story to flesh this "family" out. Without it I couldn't really connect with any of them and therefore didn't really care what happened to them in the end. I think that this is a movie that had potential to be something really great and different, but ended up being hollow and empty. Which is ironic since this is a film trying to warn us all about the evils of consumerism. Was this the point? I don't think so, but if it was done deliberately I'd say that's kinda genius. I did keep watching to the end to see how it all ended so it has that going for it I guess. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/12/22 Full Review Audience Member Not a good movie at all, it had a good plot that didn't develop enough so the ending just didn't cut it. Amber played herself, sl*ty daughter, and takes her clothes off which is nice, and the brother was actually pretty good, as well as David, but Demi was just not the right person for that role and didn't come off as authentic. Boring, lost any interest after the first 20 minutes, and watched it in spurts over many days because I couldn't sit through it all at once Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member They're not the perfect family, but it seems like it at the opening of this movie. It doesn't take long to understand that the Jones family is a bit strange. Stay with the movie and it will all be made clear. There are laughs, some tragedy, and some subtle and not so subtle statements about materialism. The Truman Show overtones are unmistakable and the ending comes out of nowhere.
