Critics Consensus

Director Bennett Miller, along with Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill, take a niche subject and turn it into a sharp, funny, and touching portrait worthy of baseball lore.

Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Like a long, boring game of chess, where hopeful baseball players are discarded as effortlessly as a pawn and a knight, Moneyball fails to provide the sentiment it needs to inspire audiences. Rated: C- Sep 8, 2017 Full Review Rafer Guzman Newsday Moneyball is a winner, one of the freshest and smartest sports movies in years. Rated: 3.5/4 May 6, 2014 Full Review David Elliott San Diego Reader Brad Pitt is at the top of his own game as Beane. Cocky and often nonchalant, he is gnawed by doubts that he tries to cover by grabbing a snack or pitching a grin. Rated: 4/4 May 6, 2014 Full Review Fico Cangiano CineXpress Podcast How can you not be romantic about baseball and this film? A superb script by Aaron Sorkin, great performances by Pitt and Hill, and solid direction by Miller result in a phenomenal sports drama of how the sport evolved. Caleigh N With it's intriguing plot and theme, Moneyball is a clever story about a baseball team dealing with a financial crisis. The storytelling can be a bit slow at times, but the characters' problem solving skills are unique and very risky. It's definitely a high stakes film that is engaging and promotes out-of-the-box thinking. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/30/24 Full Review Morbeus f I think this film is quite unique in terms of rethinking the way the establishment view the sport of baseball. It reveals a team thought to be a bunch of losers that end up setting a record of consecutive wins that exceeded one of the greatest teams in the history baseball. It also completely re-examines how ball players are selected to play professional sport concentrating on potential future ability to perform as opposed to actual present performance which inevitably leads to excellence in that respect. Great performances by Brad Pitt and The supporting cast make this one of the greatest sport films produced. A must see for all you fans out there. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/28/24 Full Review Emon M its worth watching and inspiring :) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/05/24 Full Review Faiz D I enjoyed this film because of Brad Pitt's moving performance. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/29/24 Full Review Audience Member I really dug this movie as someone who is a big baseball fan Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/27/24 Full Review R B Apparently, Nigel Andrews of the Financial Times wrote, "Brad Pitt in a dugout. Oh dear; oh dear." Oh dear indeed: Brad Pitt's character (Billy Beane) is too aloof and superstitious to set foot in the A's dugout. Splat. Synopsis Billy Beane (Brad Pitt), general manager of the Oakland A's, one day has an epiphany: Baseball's conventional wisdom is all wrong. Faced with a tight budget, Beane must reinvent his team by outsmarting the richer ball clubs. Joining forces with Ivy League graduate Peter Brand (Jonah Hill), Beane prepares to challenge old-school traditions. He recruits bargain-bin players whom the scouts have labeled as flawed, but have game-winning potential. Based on the book by Michael Lewis.
