Critics Consensus
One of the definitive Generation X movies, Say Anything... is equally funny and heartfelt -- and it established John Cusack as an icon for left-of-center types everywhere.
Kirk Honeycutt Hollywood Reporter Say Anything is an easy film to like. Apr 14, 2017 Full Review Bill Weber Slant Magazine Say Anything was a singularly three-dimensional teen romance after a decade of broad gags and breakfast-club stereotypes in John Hughesland. Rated: 3.5/4 Nov 19, 2009 Full Review Variety Staff Variety Cusack and Skye's relationship develops nicely and believably, but Crowe has not written an entirely convincing character for the latter to play. Jul 17, 2007 Full Review Roger Moore Movie Nation Aging better than any of its high school rom-com classmates...a true classic of the genre. Rated: 3.5/4 Apr 23, 2023 Full Review Joe Lipsett Hazel & Katniss & Harry & Starr Podcast A surprisingly mature teen film about negotiating the transition from teen to adulthood, anchored by a seminal John Cusack performance whose Lloyd Dobler has rightfully become an icon of the genre. Apr 11, 2023 Full Review Erik Childress The Friendship Dilemma Podcast Cameron Crowe’s film helped graduate the ‘80s teen romance into a new level and decades later these are still characters and relationships that carry meaning for all of us and our own insecurities about love and economics. Rated: 4/4 Aug 3, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews
Kevin L Sweet movie. Not sure how accurate this was at portraying high school or just post-HS teens, but it's pretty in-keeping w/ 80's movies. Cusack is always good. Taylor is good here as well. I didn't even recognize Adlon. Crowe did a solid job, esp. for his age and inexperience. Piven was lame, but... So much depends on Skye's performance, but I found it pretty avg. And I just did not see the reason for the dad's storyline turning out like that. Was Crowe just tired of the helicopter parent pushing for the kid's academic excellence for the ivy league career scenario? 3 stars Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/15/24 Full Review Christian K "I can't work for that corporation" in reference to the military is awesome. The side story of the corrupt dad is pretty weak and so weird for a movie like this. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/11/24 Full Review Will C I've been watching 80's films lately. I stumbled into this one and was surprised at how good it was. Definitely a cut above the rest in its genre. More sincere, real characters, and quite charming. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/05/24 Full Review Audience Member One of the worst films I’ve watched in a long time. There’s no way the ratings are this high. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/20/24 Full Review Ram L The critic and audience reviews here make me wonder whether I know anything about movies at all. What I see is just this: A couple hook up and things move smoothly except there's a forthcoming problem, obvious from the outset; there's then a twist that leads to some drama, which is given about five minutes of screen time that sees some really poor acting; the relationship then continues, with an ending that makes it seem like urban life today is as simple as... as we all wish it were. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/28/24 Full Review Johanna W Phenomenal characters in a movie that absolutely holds-up after all these years. Still a go-to when I need a reminder that sometimes the best possible outcome in life is falling in love with a good person. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/18/24 Full Review Read all reviews

Say Anything... (1989) View more photos
Synopsis In a charming, critically acclaimed tale of first love, Lloyd (John Cusack), an eternal optimist, seeks to capture the heart of Diane (Ione Skye), an unattainable high-school beauty and straight-A student. It surprises just about everyone when she returns the sentiment. But Diane's overly possessive, divorced father (John Mahoney) doesn't approve and it will take more than the power of love to conquer all.
