Critics Consensus

Like its predecessors, Expendables 3 offers a modicum of all-star thrills for old-school action thriller aficionados -- but given all the talent assembled, it should have been a lot more fun.

Sophie Gilbert The Atlantic The movie borrows so liberally from other action films that it starts to feel at times a bit like a BuzzFeed listicle. Dec 31, 2015 Full Review Evan Williams The Australian Yes, it's pretty much the same mixture as before, but slicker and more polished, and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 19, 2014 Full Review Jonathan Romney Observer (UK) If they're expendable, why won't they die? Rated: 2/5 Aug 17, 2014 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy The action scenes largely fail to snap, crackle, and pop. Rated: 2/4 Sep 27, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies “The Expendables 3” lacks the fun, the excitement, and the charm that the franchise built itself on. Rated: 2/5 Aug 20, 2022 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson It’s not a pretty one, but the third film, for the most part, departs from the hearty rerun missions of the first two films. John D Escapism. Action with no drama. This is it if that’s what you’re looking for. Meanwhile, completely implausible in every way imaginable. Still, just plain fun to see these guys together, especially ten years later. Great memories! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/29/24 Full Review Blu B It's fun enough. The acting isn't bad with the whole cast being divided into a couple camps. Boring and forgettable, boring and feeling tired (Ford & others), decent, and actually good (Banderas, Grammer & Gibson). Banderas is completely pointless with no reason to be here and his comedy and energy is easily the best thing. The new young group is probably the weakest thing depite being a key part of the story. They just all blend in as a group and don't really have anything unique. Granted they never really attempt to give them much depth. Everything else is alright. It's more of the same from what you've already seen. Over the top, cliche, self aware mindless action fun with a over the top plot. The worst part is oddly enough the big end battle which has sooooo much going on it's hard to follow it with it because of so many characters. It really becomes too mindless and jumpy to follow. It's perfectly serviceable though, makes total sense and is easy to follow. The opening train scene is the best part. This gets very boring though in the other nonaction scenes. The direction isn't any special either. It's sloppy how they introduce all the new characters one by one as well in the middle. If you love the first two than you'll like this. If you didn't like the second than skip this. It's a fair enough conclusion to the trilogy. But most should just stick to the first. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/08/24 Full Review Michael P If youre looking for a great action movie, watch the second enstament of this franchise. None the less, ever so entertaining and passes the time easily. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/23/24 Full Review Casa N It's a movie about killing That's rated PG-13 that tells you all you need to know it's complete trash and it's nothing but a money grab and it was garbage it's the worst one in the series and it's not worth watching any remake of it R-rated movie that is PG-13 is automatically trash trash trash just watch the original even though this isn't a remake it's a PG-13 movie of an R-rated super bloody series that went and got itself greedy and made some more trash Stallone you're too old to get out of movies Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/15/24 Full Review matthias s "The Expendables 3" continues the franchise's trend of explosive action with an all-star cast, including some exciting new additions. The fun of seeing these iconic actors on screen together is undeniable, but the film suffers from a thin story that doesn't offer much depth or surprise. While it's somewhat enjoyable, it feels like more of the same, lacking the freshness or creativity to elevate it. The decision to opt for a PG-13 rating instead of R feels like a misstep, diluting the intensity that the series is known for. Mel Gibson, while a strong actor, doesn't deliver as a threatening villain, leaving the movie feeling flat and soulless. The absence of the comedic elements that lightened previous installments is sorely missed. In the end, "The Expendables 3" is a decent, if flawed, entry okay for fans, but not the series’ best moment. Synopsis Years ago, Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) co-founded the Expendables with Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson). After Stonebanks became an arms dealer, Ross was forced to kill him -- or so he thought. Now, Stonebanks is back and he's on a mission to end the Expendables. Ross decides that the way to fight old blood is with new blood, so he assembles a team of younger, faster, more tech-savvy recruits. The battle to topple Stonebanks becomes a clash of old-school methods vs. high-tech expertise.
