Critics Consensus

Trollhunter is a mockumentary with an appropriate level of creeping dread, but one that also benefits from generous helpings of dry wit.

Jason Bailey DVDTalk.com Rated: 4/5 Apr 6, 2012 Full Review Michael Wilmington Chicago Reader The film is shot with handheld cameras in the standard mockumentary style, but the content is often hilarious, especially when the trolls show up. Dec 13, 2011 Full Review Tim Robey Daily Telegraph (UK) vredal's movie has wittier ideas up its sleeve than the average "mock-doc" shocker, a genre it transcends through sheer originality. Rated: 4/5 Sep 9, 2011 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Øvredal’s frame, for the most part, resists typical “found footage” unintelligibility and captures some truly arresting scenery from the director’s homeland, all with some minor commentary about preserving our natural wildlife treasures. Rated: 3/4 Jun 7, 2023 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy One of the better entries in the “found footage” series of faux documentaries. Rated: 3/4 Feb 15, 2023 Full Review Emma Wolfe SpookyAstronauts I know that people are against found footage films but this one, just you can't fault it really, I mean other than having trolls which is kind of silly... It did everything right. Rated: 8/10 Jun 2, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Aidan B Some solid work and great lore make up for a lackluster story and disappointing result. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/22/24 Full Review B P Great troll mythology film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/12/24 Full Review Georgan G This movie is worthy of a cult, it's that much fun. Between the acting & special effects, there is no time to get bored. Best of all, there are several species of trolls! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/06/23 Full Review Eye C Well, the Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield has a norwegian child. The film is overly interesting, overly monotonous and overdone with the errors of the "found footage" format; in short, it is all over the place. The whole issue of landing the fantasy around trolls is wonderful, there is no doubt about that. But there are many buts. For example, the troll hunter exposes the monotony of his profession so well that it permeates the viewer, what he does has become so everyday that it lacks emotion. Then, the camera shots... they forget that it should have been captured by the students, but then they enter into the vehicule and we saw a scene of the car driving away... so then who took that, and so on for a while of things like this. In the end, it is interesting and totally realistic, so much that when the fantasy element appears, it is seen with the same monotony as the one that gives the film its name. Oh! and not scary, not at all. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/13/23 Full Review Pine D I first saw this maybe a year or less after it came out. I was about 11 at the time and still believed in magic and monsters, and loved this entire movie. I really thought it was real at the time. Over ten years later and it's still one of my favorite movies. The mix of found footage with urban fantasy and countryside road-trip vibes really gets me. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/16/23 Full Review Mark W An instant classic. Slowly pulls you in and never lets go. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/04/23 Full Review Read all reviews
