Critics Consensus
While devotees of John Updike's novel may want to put a hex on George Miller's cartoonish and effects-laden adaptation, Jack Nicholson lends enough decadent devilry to make this high-concept comedy sizzle.
Pauline Kael New Yorker Even at its trashiest the movie keeps bumping along. Sep 13, 2023 Full Review Henry Sheehan Chicago Reader All in all, a polished and witty bit of male sexual panic. Rated: 3/4 May 10, 2022 Full Review Gene Siskel Chicago Tribune Nicholson doesn't need special effects; he is one himself. Yet on balance, the film is mostly an outrageous, foul-mouthed good time. Rated: 3/4 Apr 22, 2022 Full Review Bernard Welt Washington Blade George Miller, who directed the Mad Max trilogy, has made The Witches of Eastwick a provocative movie, decidedly unwholesome without being cynical, when so many movies today are either sentimental, or cynical in a transparently sentimental way. May 20, 2022 Full Review Helen Knode L.A. Weekly Mad Max director George Miller films this New Testament moralizing with bounce but no particular style; his distinct cinematic flavor seems to depend on his subject matter. Apr 22, 2022 Full Review Christine Arnold Dolan Miami Herald The Witches of Eastwick is a diverting, impeccably polished and excellently cast movie. But its charms fade fast, about as fast as it takes to leave the theater. Rated: 2.5/4 Apr 22, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews
Nicole S It was everything. A little bit of female friendship, love and magic, and A LOT OF CRAZY. Weirdly sweet ending. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/21/24 Full Review Michael S Brilliant in every way Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/06/24 Full Review Rami A Once again, Jack Nicholson was destined to portray the major part of a devil in this movie. And he is a special effect; he needs none! Cher, Susan Sarandon, and Michelle Pfeiffer all gave outstanding performances. John Williams captures it all in this film with his score. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/11/24 Full Review Emma W Nothing is sexy or appealing about Jack Nicholson in this movie. Alex's (Cher) vocal opinion of him at the start of the film (before she then kisses him!) stays with you till the end. An old, over-weight, sweaty character that reminds me more of Yo Samity Sam than a ‘horny little devil'. This film has not aged well. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/25/23 Full Review Autumn M Witches of Eastwick is a interesting supernatural comedy starring the incomparable Cher, Michelle Pfeiffer, Susan Sarandon and Jack Nicholson. It is a zany look at three women in New England who fall in love with a man who has a very dark secret. Jack Nicholson is pure electricity as the seductive lover. Recommended Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/13/23 Full Review Jelisije J A fantastic goofy dark comedy with the Great Jack Nicholson as the devil himself seducing 3 women who are actual witches.
