[*1] Competition abandoned due to annoyance of trophy donator with lack of interest of clubs, with only the final between H.F.C. and R.A.P. left to be played. [*2] Ajax actually lost in the round of 16, 2-1 away to A.Z. '67. Since by that stage only 14 teams actually were in the competition, one of the 7 defeated teams was drawn into the quarterfinal. Ajax won that draw and responded by winning the Cup. The rule, which had been in use for some years due to the K.N.V.B. policy of only admitting professional teams, was immediately abolished. [*3] During the second half of the 1991 final the pitch was repeatedly invaded by Feyenoord "fans"; eventually, the referee halted the match after 84 minutes with Feyenoord leading 1-0. Scandalously, Feyenoord were declared winners, in spite of the facts that the match was never finished and a court ruled that the second half should be replayed (a ruling revoked on appeal by Feyenoord (who claimed they could not get a team together for the replay) and the Dutch FA). [*4] Competition abandoned due to Covid-19 pandemic with only the final between Feyenoord and F.C. Utrecht left to be played.

Trivia

In the beginning of the century, there were several seasons in which the teams from "eerste klasse" (the highest level) were allowed only to enter their second teams. Two of the early finals therefore saw two second teams facing each other (1908 and 1910).

The abandoned competition in 1894 was played for the "Holdert-beeld"; those between 1899 and 1920 for the "Holdertbeker"; from 1921 until 1929 for the "N.V.B. Beker". After the Dutch FA were given the epithet "Koninklijke" (Royal) it became "K.N.V.B. Beker". Later, sponsoring caused several name changes which are not reflected in the overview below.

When A.D.O. faced Ajax in the 1968 final, they had lost their previous 4 finals. Ajax had won the 4 finals they had played until then. A.D.O. finally got things right in that fifth attempt. A.D.O. later merged with Holland Sport to become F.C. Den Haag; together, A.D.O. and F.C. Den Haag appeared in 8 finals, winning only 2.

Three consecutive cups were won by Quick (Den Haag) (1909-1911, the first two with their second team), Ajax (1970-1972), and P.S.V. (1988-1990).

Feyenoord won 13 of their 14 cups on their own field (including the abandoned 1991 final); they also lost 2 finals they hosted.

Sparta, the oldest team (founded 1888) remaining in Dutch professional football and one of the strongest teams of the country since their foundation, had to wait until 1958 for their first final appearance.

Until the 21st century, the big three did not play each other very often in finals: Ajax v Feyenoord occurred twice (1980 and 2010) and Feijenoord v P.S.V. once (1969); Ajax and P.S.V. met each other five times in a final (1970, 1998, 2006, 2022 and 2023).

Repeated finals (apart from replays):

Ajax v P.S.V. (1970, 1998, 2006, 2022, 2023)

A.Z. v Ajax (1978, 1981, 2007)

Ajax v Feyenoord (1980, 2010) Ajax v N.A.C. (1961, 1967) Ajax v F.C. Den Haag (1972, 1987) Ajax v F.C. Twente (1979, 2011) Feyenoord v N.E.C. (1994, 2024) Feyenoord v Roda J.C. (1992, 2008) Feyenoord v F.C. Utrecht (2003, 2016) P.S.V. v Roda J.C. (1976, 1988)

and, including second teams:

H.B.S. v V.O.C. (1905, 1908)

If we add finals for merger clubs, we find 3 occurrences for Ajax v F.C. Den Haag/A.D.O. (1968, 1972, 1987) and 2 for Feyenoord v Fortuna Sittard/Fortuna '54 (1957, 1984).

Notes

Compare the notes in the file on Dutch champions.

In addition to what is written there, note that in 1964 K.F.C. was split in an amateur section K.F.C. and a professional section F.C. Zaanstreek, which later merged with Alkmaar '54 to become A.Z. '67 (now simply A.Z.). Z.F.C. merged in 1990 with Z.V.V. to form Hellas Sport. Fortuna '54 merged with Sittardia to form F.S.C., later renamed Fortuna Sittard. D.F.C. were later renamed to first F.C. Dordrecht, then D.S. '79, and then Dordrecht '90, before merging with S.V.V. to become S.V.V./Dordrecht '90; they since returned to Dordrecht '90 and later to F.C. Dordrecht. Helmondia merged with Kolping S.D.W. to form Helmondia '55, from which a professional section named Helmond Sport was formed in 1967.

H.F.C. and H.V.V. obtained the predicate "Koninklijke" (Royal), and are now known as Kon. H.F.C. and Kon. H.V.V. respectively.
