About

We tackle some of the most difficult challenges in genomic research. This demands science at scale; a visionary and creative approach to research that pushes the boundaries of our understanding in ever new and exciting ways.

Our Vision

The Wellcome Sanger Institute is a world leader in genome research that delivers insights into human and pathogen biology that change science and medicine.

Impact

Sanger Institute’s history.

Careers

Join our community of world class thinkers and professionals at the Sanger Institute located in Cambridge. Together we achieve life-changing science.

Study

We are committed to training the next generation of pioneering genome scientists and clinicians At the Wellome Sanger Institute, near Cambridge, we give students all the tools they need to succeed in the field of genomics research.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Women are represented in diminishing proportions as career levels progress and significant numbers of women leave science altogether. Scientists from marginalised groups such as LGBT+, BME and disabled scientists also do not achieve success at the same rates as their counterparts. With partners on the Wellcome Genome Campus we explore these issues, look to inspire researchers, develop discussion and drive change in current practices and policy.

Leadership

The Director, Matthew Hurles, has overall responsibility for all areas of the Sanger Institute, reporting to GRL Board three times per year and the Wellcome Trust Board of Governors once per year.

Strategy and Funding

The Sanger Institute’s mission is to use information from genome sequences to advance understanding of biology and improve health.

Influencing Policy

The Sanger Institute advises all levels of government both in the UK and across the world on the the role, impact and importance of genomic and life science research.

Research Policies

Sanger Institute’s Research Policies are designed to provide guidance to help researchers navigate the legislation relating to their research and to ensure that research is ethical and legal.

Campus Connections

The Sanger Institute is sited on the Wellcome Genome Campus at the very heart of a global hub of fundamental and applied genomic research, education and engagement. The Campus is home to some of the world’s foremost institutes and organisations using genomes and biodata to deliver science with the reach, scale and imagination to solve some of humanity’s greatest challenges and maximise societal benefit

Science

Our science is organised into six Scientific Programmes, each defining a major area of research with a particular biological, disease or analytic focus. In all cases, the studies provide insights into human, pathogen, cellular evolution, the phenotypic and hence biological consequences of genome variation and the processes which cause mutations.

Sanger Seminar Series

Throughout the COVID-19 lockdown of 2020-2021 we hosted a series of monthly freely available and open virtual seminars, showcasing how our researchers are tackling some of the greatest challenges in human health and disease. From using genomic approaches to map all cell types in the human body, understand how cancer develops, and track the evolution and spread of global diseases, our senior scientists and faculty presented the latest developments in their field.

People

Almost 1,000 scientists, developers, engineers and skilled professionals work together to deliver the Sanger Institute’s cutting-edge genomic research.

Leadership

The Sanger Leadership Team is an Executive Committee that reports to the Director and the Genome Research Limited (GRL) Board. It is designed to enable holistic and effective decision making, with transparency and accountability woven into its make up.

Faculty

Our science is organised into five Scientific Programmes, each defining a major area of research with a particular biological, disease or analytic focus. In all cases, the studies provide insights into human, pathogen, cellular evolution, the phenotypic and hence biological consequences of genome variation and the processes which cause mutations.

Full A-Z

Almost 1,000 scientists, developers, engineers and skilled professionals work together to deliver the Sanger Institute’s cutting-edge genomic research.

Innovation

We deliver therapeutic, diagnostic and production benefits in areas as diverse as cancer, immunology, public health and personalised treatment.

Innovation at the Institute

We deliver therapeutic, diagnostic and production benefits in areas as diverse as cancer, immunology, public health and personalised treatment.

For Industry

Our translation team was established in 2011 to help maximise the socioeconomic impact of the Sanger Institute’s discoveries. Members of this team specialise in helping to translate science into products and services and the Institute’s research has already produced marketed technologies that have been realised into benefits for patients in a variety of settings.

For Researchers

The Sanger Institute has always sought to facilitate improvements in human health. As the Institute continues to generate an ever deeper biological understanding of the genomic data and engender clinical perspectives to its science it will be faced with even greater opportunities to contribute to healthcare improvements.

Case Studies

We engage with the funding, R&D, service and clinical communities to promote real-world utilization of the Sanger Institute’s technologies and resources.

Our Spin-Outs

The Institute has a culture and history of scaling technologies, some of these capabilities have become spin-out companies that represent an important step towards the creation of a positive impact in today’s healthcare sector.

Sanger Technologies

We create technologies and therapies of tomorrow through open dialogue with our many partners.
