ICESat-2 is a NASA satellite mission recommended by the 2007 NRC Decadal Survey to continue precise measurements of ice sheet and sea ice elevations begun by the original ICESat mission. ICESat-2 will use a new photon-counting technique with multiple beams rather than a single beam to improve elevation estimates, especially over rough terrain. It is scheduled for launch in late 2018 on a dual-manifest launch. The mission objectives are to quantify ice sheet mass balance, sea ice thickness, vegetation structure, and improve other Earth observation capabilities.
