For about 60 years California's Nevada desert has been home to one of the world's most secret military bases. Prepare to grab your pass and step beyond the electronic security as you explore the infamous Area 51.

As part of a US Government Special Forces team, you're sent to investigate a viral outbreak which has occurred deep within the confines of the research facility.

As the deadly virus spreads it turns infected workers into mutated zombies, which presents problems for your team. Things get worse upon the discovery of an alien colony that has called the base home since 1947.

While not explored to its fullest, the storyline does integrate well with the first-person gunplay that makes up most of the action. Cut-scenes are well crafted and, unlike the game's linear progression, reveal a number of unexpected twists, one which sees your character infected by the virus, giving him the ability to change in and out of a mutant state.

This altered state offers different powers such as increased strength and several viral-based weapons that can be used to advantage in certain situations.

Whichever state the character is in there is rarely a moment where hordes of mutants aren't bearing down from all sides. While this doesn't result in sophisticated combat it does guarantee a constant rush of adrenaline.

A familiar collection of customisable multiplayer matches are available, plus an interesting mode called Infection, in which a randomly selected player has to catch and infect as many other players as possible.

In addition to absorbing cut-scenes and impressive visuals throughout, a number of celebs have lent their voices for the characters, including David Duchovny, Powers Boothe, and Marilyn Manson. However, their performances are not enough for this mediocre action shooter to stand out in this over-crowded genre. While newcomers can expect a rewarding experience, veterans will quickly find it has all been done before.

Endgame: Lacking any innovation, the best this game offers has already been done.

Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict

Runs on: Xbox

Price: $99.95

Classification: MA15+

Rating: * * * *

In a bold move for the Unreal series, fast-paced melee combat is now available alongside the traditional long-range weapons. This means a different approach is needed to play the game.

Additionally a third-person perspective can be selected during either forms of combat. This offers a fresh view of the action and allows you to keep track of opponents more easily. It is also possible to lock onto them, ensuring they remain on screen.

After mastering the two forms of combat, which does take some getting used to, players must also learn how to leap around wall-jumping, traverse large gaps with super jumps and pull off deadly finishing moves in close combat.

Each of the 14 characters has different abilities and weapons at his disposal. These are generally well balanced and provide an equal challenge against any opposition. Deceit, treachery and stray bullets riddle the game's short but interesting story mode.

Tournament and challenge modes are provided for solo players as pre-match training for the meat of this game, the multiplayer modes. Death matches can be played split-screen by two players or online with up to eight players. There is a large array of customisation options and maps available in both offline and online events.

Whether in the thick of battle or viewing a cut scene, the visuals impress, showing off the graphic prowess of the console. The introduction of elements from a different genre may challenge fans of the series, but the implementation works well and gives plenty of life to this classic series.

Endgame: Where others have failed, this Unreal benefits from the merging of genres.
