Farming and Wine-making in Sompting (original) (raw)
The downland farms of the Sompting Estate,Titch Hill and Upton, Church and Lychpole Farms, shown on the map below, have changed their boundaries over the years. The four old Sompting farming manors, Sompting Abbotts, Lychpole, Peverel and Cokeham, ran from near the coast up to the downland heights. So each manor's farms had a variety of lands and could graze livestock on the chalk in winter and on the marsh in the summer. We have restored a traditional downland farming mix which helps to sustain both soil fertility and also wildlife. Sheep and cattle are raised in a rotating patchwork of arable rotational crops and grassland. Sompting Estate's farms are members of the Arun to Adur Farmers Group , working together for wildlife on a landscape scale. Within the farm's cropping mix we now also have several vineyards and make our own wine. The map below shows where our farms are. Follow these links to learn more:
