| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | (1) We have seen the suggestion in a web site that the/a Lascelles family descended from Dolphin of Appletreewick. However, 'The History and Antiquities of Harewood' suggests that the following Picot possibly came from Lassele in Normandy whilst TCP (Lascelles) suggests that "From his name he is supposed to have been a Breton". TCP does note that "There were several families of this name in the North of England in the 12th and 13th centuries" thereby leaving open the possibility that there may have been different families of different roots which happened to have the same name. (2) TCP covers only one line of this family, the first shown here, but that contradicts what is reported by 'The History and Antiquities of Harewood' and the Visitations. As we give precedence to TCP, this causes us some problems, not helped by there being some contradictions/alternatives included within the Visitations. The following should be viewed as provisional and subject to change. We italicise where we have relied wholly on 'The History and Antiquities of Harewood'. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Picot de Lascelles (a 1066) possibly father or grandfather of ... | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 1. | Roger de Lascelles in Yorkshire & Lincolnshire | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | A. | Picot de Lascelles | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | TCP reports that "There is no evidence to show the relationship of" this Picot and the Picot (d c1178) who married and had descendants as follows. However, though noting that there may have been 2 cousins of the same name, we presume to show that it was indeed this Picot who died c1178 and married ... | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | m. ?? (sister or daughter of Alan, son of Roald the Constable) | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | i. | Roger de Lascelles (b c1160, d before 10.1219) | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | m. Beatrice | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The following pedigree for 'the 4 heiresses' follows TCP. However: (1) Visitation (Yorkshire) has a section which starts with Roger de Lascells, father of Picotus father of Roger (a 1213) father of both Richard of Escryck and Roger (a 1281) who married Isabella and had the 4 heiresses. (2) Visitation (Nottinghamshire) shows Roger (dsp) & Avice (a 1252-3) as children (by Maud) of Picot (son of Picot son of Galfrey) brother of Roger, father of Picot and William of Escrick (but shows no children for that WIlliam). That last Picot is shown as father of Sir John (who by Issabell is shown as father of the 4 heiresses) and Richard of Lescrick. As we give precedence to TCP, we are left uncertain on how to place that last Richard. TCP does not identify any issue for Roger's son Picot but follows the family of Picot's brother (probably but not definitely another Roger). We presume to partly follow Visitation (Nottinghamshire) in showing Picot as father of another Picot plus a William. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | a. | Picot de Lascelles (a 1251) | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | m. Joan Topcliff (dau of John Topcliff of Somerby) | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | ((2)) | Sir Roger Lasscells | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Through his children, Sir Roger is identified as the Sir Roger Lascelles of Sowerby & Brackenborough for whom we suggest a possible alternative ancestry - see @2@ below. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | b. | (Roger?) de Lascelles (d by 1245?) | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | (1) | Roger de Lascelles of Fulstow (dsp by 1253) | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | (3) | Avice or Amice de Lascelles (d by 1261, heir of her brother Roger) | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | m1. Visitation (Nottinghamshire) starts with ... | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | (a) | Sir Richard Lascells or Lascelles of Eastkrick or Escrick (d 1321) - continued below | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | m. Sir John Colnell of Armtethorpe | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Sir Richard Lascells or Lascelles of Eastkrick or Escrick (d 1321) - continued above | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | m. Elizabeth de la River (dau of Sir John de la River of Bransbie) | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 1. | Sir John Lascelles of Escrick | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 'The History and Antiquities of Harewood' suggests that Sir John married a daughter of Sir Lionel Percy. Visitation (Nottinghamshire) reports that he married ... | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | m. Anne Skipwith (dau of Sir William Skipwith) | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | A. | Sir Ralph Lascelles of Escrick | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | m. Joan Burdett (dau/heir of John Burdett) called Burnet by 'The History and Antiquities of Harewood' | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | i. | Sir Ralph Lascelles of Escrick | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | m. Maud Constable (dau of Sir William Constable of Flamborough) | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | a. | Sir Walter Lascelles of Escrick (a 1401) | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Visitation (Nottinghamshire) shows that Sir Walter married Agnes, dau/coheir of Sir Robert Rocliff. 'The History and Antiquities of Harewood' identifies her as Agnes, dau of Sir Richard Roecliffe. We note that Visitation (Yorskhire, 1563-4, Roclyff) shows there was a Sir William Lascelles, roughly around this time, who married a Jennet, dau of Sir Richard Roclyff, and was father of William father of William father of John. We do not have enough evidence to assume that Agnes was the same person as Jennet (and that Sir Walter was the same person as Sir William) but thought it worthwhile to draw attention to these facts. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | m. Agnes Rocliffe (dau of Sir Robert or Richard Rocliff or Roecliffe) | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | (1) | Sir Walter Lascelles of Escrick | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | m. _ Eland (dau of Sir John Eland (probably not Bland)) | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | (A) | William Lascelles | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | m. _ Medcalfe | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | (i) | William Lascelles | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | m. Joan Topcliff (dau of John Topcliff of Somerby) | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | (ii)+ | other issue - John, Richard, Henry | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | (B)+ | other issue - Robert, Edward | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | (3) | Catherine Lascelles | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | b. | Richard Lascelles of Sayre had issue 'of Sayre' | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | m. Elizabeth Delamore | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | C. | Sir Geffery (Jeffrey) Lascelles | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Visitation (Nottinghamshire) does no more than mention Sir Geffery. 'The History and Antiquities of Harewood' suggests that he married ... | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | m. _ Lithgrave (dau of Sir John Lithgrave) | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | i. | Richard Lascelles of Sand Hutton & Brakenburgh | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | (1) In its section on the Lascelles of Escrick, 'The History and Antiquities of Harewood' mentions this Richard but says no more on his descendants. In another section, on 'Lascelles of Sowerby and Brackenburgh', the book starts with a Sir Roger Lascelles of Sowerby and Brackenburgh who by Isabel was father of another Sir Roger (who married Margaret Norton) and 4 daughters - the same 4 heiresses mentioned by TCP (Lascelles) as being the only issue of Roger, Lord Lascelles (see above). This contradiction is the main reason why we have not obtained confidence in that book. (2) Visitation (Yorkshire) starts its second section with the undermentioned Sir Roger (who married Margaret Norton) very closely to its first section (which ended with the 4 daughters of Lord Roger). However, the Harleian Society's report on the Visitation, upon which we rely, appears not to connect the two sections (correctly, according to TCP). It is possible that John Jones, when preparing 'The History and Antiquities of Harewood', saw a connection between the sections which led him to think that Sir Roger was brother of the above-mentioned 4 heiresses (incorrectly, according to TCP). (3) Provisionally, we presume that it is possible that the Lascelleses of Sowerby & Brackenborough descended from the above Richard and show this here as a possible ancestry for the undermentioned Sir Roger. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | a. | ?? Lascelles presumed intermediary generation | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | (1) | Sir Roger Lascelles of Sowerby & Brackenborough | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | An alternative ancestry for Roger is suggested by Visitation (Nottinghamshire) - see @2@ above. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | m.
