Exclusive – Pardew: Carroll needs a confidence boost... (original) (raw)

Andy Pardew insists Andy Carroll needs a confidence boost if he’s to achieve the form he showed during his time at Newcastle.

The England striker moved to Anfield in a £35million move last January but has so far struggled to impress for his new club and was an unused substitute as the Reds saw off Brighton 2-1 in the League Cup.

But former manager Pardew believes Carroll has the ability to be a success for Kenny Dalglish’s men.

“He’s getting some criticism because they’re trying to find a style that suits Andy,” Pardew said. “Andy Carroll is a very, very good player, but he’s a young player.

“He’s finding when you go to a big club it’s different. He’s come out of the comfortable environment in the north-east, which gives you a confidence when he knows everybody and everybody knows him.

“It hasn’t start well at Liverpool but the one thing that I can assure you is that the players won’t think that he’s not putting it in at training.

“He trains well, he never misses training and even when he has a slight injury he’ll play. He just needs to get his confidence and he’ll be fine and go on to be a significant player for Liverpool and, hopefully, England.”
