[% META title = 'The Jon Lord Discobiography' %]

Jon Douglas Lord...was born on 9th June 1941 in Leicester, Great Britain. He started practising the piano at the age of 9, when his father decided that little Jon should become a classical pianist. After having adapted emotionally to the instrument, he found jazz & blues a more alluring sort of music. Note that Lord's middle name is *not* Vernon but Douglas. Thus he did not paint the sleeve-art for The Book Of Taliesyn. Some Cambridge professor did that.

Sometime during 1964 The Kinks
_People involved_The Kinks, i.e. Mick Avory (drm); Dave Davies (gtr/vcl); Ray Davies (vcl/gtr); Pete Quaife (bss); plus some sessioners incl. Jon Lord (kbr) and Jimmy Page (gtr). The Kinks felt they needed some musicianship on their early recordings and thus invited some sessioners. Hence Jon Lord came to play piano on "You Really Got Me"! He probably plays organ on "Bald Headed Woman" and possibly also "Long Tall Sally" and "Lover Not A Fighter". Not all sources agree on Lord's contributions to this album though. Some claim he played piano and organ all over it, while others say he played piano on "You Really Got Me" and nothing else. Perhaps he played more than what was eventually ended up being released. September 1969 Concerto For Group And Orchestra
_People involved_Ritchie Blackmore (gtr); Ian Gillan (vcl); Roger Glover (bss); Jon Lord (org/pno/kbr); Ian Paice (drm); and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Malcolm Arnold.Lord's Concerto was performed live at the Royal Albert Hall on 24 September 1969; it was televized (in the UK and Denmark) and later also released on video (slightly edited), and it gave Deep Purple a huge marketing. Gillan finished his lyrics just minutes before taking the mike; and a subsequent concert arranger secured a local brazz band to play with Deep Purple since he couldn't get the symphony orchestra! (Read all about it on the sleeve notes to the video.) The Concerto was also performed at the Hollywood Bowl in the US during August 1970. Any recordings from that? It was first performed by Deep Purple and the Light Music Society (with Malcolm Arnold again as the conductor) at the Royal Festival Hall in London on 17 September 1970. The individual movements of the Gemini Suite are slightly based on the personalities of Deep Purple. It was later re-recorded in the studio (see below) with a slight change in musicians (and musical arrangement).
