‘Sample vedikettu' lights up skies over Thrissur (original) (raw)
The city sky turned into a riot of colours as ‘Sample vedikettu', the first round of fireworks at Thrissur Pooram celebrations, was staged on Sunday.
Hundreds of crazy fireworks lovers crowded the Swaraj Round and nearby lanes to witness the spectacular show.
Paramekkavu Devaswom kicked off the ‘sample vedikettu' around 7. 15 p.m., followed by Thiruvambady Devaswom.
A fireworks display at the Thekkinkad Maidan is the piece de resistance of the Pooram. The sound of crackers is music to the ears of Pooram lovers. The more, the merrier, seems to be their motto.
Innovative patterns
The display continued for almost an hour bedazzling the spectators.
The Thiruvambady and Paramekkavu Devaswoms, the main participants of the Pooram, presented innovative patterns and varieties. The crowd shouted and screamed in approval whenever new patterns of fireworks lit up the sky.
Vennur Rajan was in charge of fireworks for the Paramekkavu Devaswom. ‘Green Snake', ‘Disco Flash' and ‘Sky Fall' were in his special menu for this pooram.
Mundathikkode Mani led the team of pyrotechnicians on the Thiruvambady side. He tried out ‘Silver Rain' and ‘Olympics Ring' as special items.
All buses running towards the city were crowded with fireworks fans right from the afternoon.
The traffic at the Swaraj road was blocked from 5 p.m.
Lured by the sights and sounds of the day, the crazy crowd would throng the Swaraj Round again for the main pyrotechnic show on May 2. Preparations for Thrissur Pooram, to be celebrated on May 1, are on in full swing. The district administration has tightened security in the town.
