Editline Library (libedit) - Port of NetBSD Command Line Editor Library (original) (raw)

This is an autotool- and libtoolized port of theNetBSD Editline library (libedit). ThisBerkeley-style licensedcommand line editor library provides generic line editing, history, and tokenization functions, similar to those found inGNU Readline.

Examples

Various examples are distributed with this package in the /examples directory.

Linking

libcurses, as well as libedit, should be linked to Editline enabled programs, e.g.

gcc -o test test.c -ledit -lncurses

pkg-config

A pkg-config libedit.pc file is provided, so you can write

PKG_CHECK_MODULES(LIBEDIT, libedit)

in configure.ac of your client program to detect the existence of libedit.so and to set CFLAGS and LIBS for using libedit.

Using the pkg-config helper tool, the linking test example above looks like,

gcc -o test test.c pkg-config --libs --cflags libedit

Unicode

To build libedit with support for unicode (wide-char/UTF-8), add the --enable-widecoption when running configure,

./configure --enable-widec

Always builds with unicode (wide-char/UTF-8) support now.
