Welcome to the Franklin County TNGenWeb site!

We would like to thank Susan Wilson James, who recently stepped down, for her years of activity here. We especially want to applaud and remember Judy Phillips for all her work as the first coordinator for Franklin County. Most of what you see here currently is Judy’s work.

On this site, you will find many FREE resources to assist with your family history research. We are thankful for our many contributors and always welcome more!

Franklin County was formed in 1807 and named after Benjamin Franklin. It is bordered by Coffee, Grundy, Lincoln, Marion, and Moore counties.

Franklin County is not to be confused with the “State of Franklin,” which was formed before statehood or with “Franklin, TN” in Williamson County.

The county seat is Winchester. Other cities and towns in the county include Cowan, Decherd, Estill Springs, Huntland, Alto, Salem, Gum Creek, Oak Grove, Belvidere, Owl Hollow, Wilder’s Chapel.
