Syracuse forward Kris Joseph made history Saturday when he was named to the Big East Conference first all-star team, the first Canadian in history to be so honoured.

The 6-foot-7 senior wing from Montreal was the top scorer for the NCAA's second-ranked team, averaging 14.1 points per game.

It's the second-highest scoring average ever recorded by a Canadian in the Big East, after fellow Syracuse star Leo Rautins, who poured in 14.2 points per game during the 1982-83 season.

Joseph led the Orange to the Big East regular-season title and a No. 1 seed in the conference tournament.

The Orange finished the regular season with a 30-1 overall record and a 17-1 Big East mark.

Joseph is one of only five Canadians ever to be named to the All-Big East team, joining fellow Montrealers Bill Wennington (3rd team '84, 2nd team '85) and Stewart Granger (3rd team '81, 2nd team '82,'83).

Rautins (3rd team '83) and his son, Andy Rautins (2nd team '10), are the only other Canadians to be named to the Big East's all-conference team.

Joseph is just one of several Canadians who are at the top of the heap in U.S. college basketball this season.

Gonzaga guard Kevin Pangos (Newmarket, Ont.) was named newcomer of the year in the West Coast Conference last week, and he and teammate Robert Sacre (North Vancouver, B.C.) were both named to the all-conference team.

St. Bonaventure forward Andrew Nicholson (Mississaugua, Ont.) is a front-runner for Atlantic-10 player of the year and Oregon sharpshooter Devoe Joseph (Pickering, Ont.) is a lock for the Pac-12 team.
