On November 23, 2004 fans finally got an insight into what was coming from the iTunes store - a "Digital Box Set" of U2 Material some 446 tracks strong, which could be downloaded with a click of a mouse (once you paid for them of course). The songs included stretch U2's entire career from early demo recordings to the newest album, this set does a very good job of showing us pretty much everything U2 has ever done. Also included is a .pdf file which lists the albums and singles throughout U2's career with cover images from the various releases.

The set is called "The Complete U2" and many fans will argue the title is misleading. First several songs are just plain missing from the set, most of these covers of other artists work over the years. But some of these songs are favorites of the fan community, and their abscense has been noted. There is an amusing fan created iMix in the US iTunes store called The inComplete U2 (link requires iTunes) which contains tracks not in the box set which can be bought on iTunes itself.

Another issue is that 48 tracks are just duplicates of what is already available elsewhere in the set, leaving this 446 song set down to only 398 unique songs. What has occurred is in an effort to be complete songs like "Beautiful Day" which never had a separate single mix, are included with both the "All That You Can't Leave Behind" album as well as with the "Beautiful Day" single. It is a little disappointing to realize you just grabbed 50 songs from the interent you didn't have to to get the complete contents. This is probably due to the fact that at this point you cannot tag a single file to count for multiple releases - hence if someone just wanted to listen to the "Beautiful Day" singles they may be dissipointed to have the title track and most the live tracks not represented.

The highlight of the set is the rare material for the U2 fan who has everything else. Unfortunately that is also why this set is being a little controversial - those who have everything have to buy it all a second time to get 10 - 15 new tracks they want because they are not available outside of the set. Adding to the frustration is the limited geography that these sets are available to, as well as frustration when people find they are unable to install the iTunes software to even see the tracklisting because they are on an unsupported operating system (Windows 95, 98 etc.)

We've got digital copies of the original single "Three", "Another Day", "11 O'Clock Tick Tock", "A Day without Me" and "I Will Follow" singles. "Out of Control" live from Boston in 1981, originally released as a b-side to "I Will Follow" is not listed among these tracks as the entire concert is included in this box set. Unfortunately "A Day Without Me" and "I Will Follow" are not different on the early singles, and thus their inclusion here is completely unnecessary as they are also inclulded in the Boy album bundle. Why pay twice for the same song? The other tracks are all different versions than appear on the albums.
Missing Tracks: The version of "Stories for Boys" which appeared on the Just for KicksCompilation.

Missing Tracks: The (3:14) edit of Fire found on the promotional single is not included and would have made more sense than including the album version again. The (3:26) edit of Gloria found on thatpromotional single would have also made more sense than duplicating the album version. Also missing are the two versions of October which were found on the They Call it an Accident soundtrack, but it might be wise just to forget those exist. Also missing from this set is the live version of "I Will Follow" recorded at Veronica's Closet and released at a singlein the Netherlands and Germany.

Missing Tracks: There were three versions of Love Comes Tumbling which were released, and although I can't be sure which is available here without listening, I'm willing to bet it's not the alternate vocal from the Australian pressings. Likewise the different live vocal mix of A Sort of Homecoming from those Australian pressings is not included. Other tracks from this era which could have been included but weren't? Wire (Celtic Dub) from the NME Poll Winners Promo, and "Maggie's Farm (Live)" from the Live in Ireland compilation.

It was disappointing to see that various "cover" songs are left out of this set like "Dancing Barefoot", "Everlasting Love" and "Unchained Melody". The lack of those songs in this set really make this less than a complete capture of their work. It's been mentioned that these songs have likely not made the cut due to the liscensing agreements that would be required to present another artist's work on iTunes. This will again blacken this set when the covers during the "Achtung Baby" singles don't make it. And like before, do we really need the Single version of "Desire"? The only thing different from the album version is Adam's comment at the start is missing. "All I Want is You" is also the same as the album version and is unecessarily duplicated twice in this set.
Missing Tracks: "Desire (9:23 Hollywood Remix)" from variouspromos, the alternate versions of "When Love Comes to Town (Live from the Kingdom Mix)" and "God Part II (Hard Metal Dance Mix) from the promos. Both the long and the short edits of "Dancing Barefoot" and "Everlasting Love" and "Unchained Melody" originally from the All I Want is You Single. Other songs from this era that could have been included? "Pride" was released on the Rainbow Warriors compilation and it was a slightly different edit of the live performance from Rattle and Hum. If you are wondering about "Jesus Christ" or "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" they are included below in the "Rare Tracks" section and do appear on this "Digital Box Set".

Stateless (Soundtrack Version) 4:05 U2 Album Only Comments: Finally something that U2 fans are going to be drooling over - a collection of rare songs some of which have never appeared in any form before. "Levitate", "Love You Like Mad", "Smile", "Flower Child", "Beautiful Ghost", "Xanax and Wine", "Native Son" and alternate versions of "All Because of You", "Yahweh" and "Sometimes You Can't Make it On Your Own" are all tracks which have never appeared before which get their first release through iTunes. They are also exclusive to the "Digital Box Set" and cannot be purchased separately as you can with many of the tunes. To me this is a bit of a slap in the face of the long time fan who would have pretty much everything else in this set. Spend your money, buy the entire set to get 10 songs you don't have already. $15 a song? I don't think so. The other "rarities" are somewhat laughable as most of them have had wide release and are still in print. "Jesus Christ", "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" and "Night and Day (Twilight Remix)" have all appeared on widely released compilations. "Stateless" was taken from the Million Dollar Hotel Soundtrack which most fans would have. The shortened form of "Bass Trap", "Salome" and "Numb" were released on the double disc versions of the Best Ofs which are also still widely available. The "Numb (Radio Edit)" track is the sole track that is difficult to find, with promo CDs contianing this track going for big prices on eBay.

But wouldn't it have been nice for them to included more instead of all the duplicate tracks found throughout the set? These tracks have been widely available on bootleg recordings for years.
