History Completed in December 1939
Notes on event At 06.15 hours on 19 Dec 1941, U-108 fired a spread of two torpedoes at convoy HG-76 west of Lisbon, observed a flash on one ship and a large column of black smoke and heard two detonations. Scholtz reported two ships of 5000 grt each sunk, but only the Ruckinge (Master William Albert Ross) in station #11 was damaged by one torpedo and later shelled and sunk by HMS Samphire (K 128) (LtCdr F.T. Renny, DSC, RNR). Two crew members were lost. The master, the chief officer, 10 crew members and two gunners were picked up by HMS Stork (L 81) (Cdr F.J. Walker, RN) and landed at Devonport. 18 crew members, four gunners and three passengers were picked up by the British steam merchant Finland from the same convoy.
