USS Iowa (Capt. J.L. Holloway, Jr., USN) departed Ulithi for the Okinawa area. Passage was made together with the aircraft carrier Shangri La (Capt. J.D. Barner, USN). They were escorted by the destroyers Haggard (Lt.Cdr. V.J. Soballe, USN) and USS Stembel (Cdr. M.S. Schmidling, USN).
